(news related) The problem with society

is this type of thinking.  This is why domestic violence is the large problem it is now.  There is always someone to excuse their bad behavior away.  As we say in the counseling world, we can't control what others do but we can control how WE respond.  I feel bad for what this family has lost, but making the victim responsible for her death (and her children's) because she "made up a story" makes me so mad!  I can't imagine how her family must feel if they've heard about this.

  • I completely agree!

"As for threats Steven made against his wife ? such as that he?d kill her and then take revenge on members of her family or that he would do things to her with a knife that ?you wouldn?t do to a farm animal,? according to Amy Lake?s statements to prosecutors ? George Lake said his son had regrets.

?He told me he regretted some of the things he said to her,? said George, though he didn?t address Amy?s allegations specifically. ?He said he was horsing around. He was like that. But he said Amy took it seriously.?

Telling your wife you are going to kill her with a knife is NOT "just horsing around". Are you effing kidding me?! This woman had every right to be terrified of this man and try and keep him away from their children.

  • What a sad article.

I think judge spoke very well and put the father in his place.

That man's father is delusional.  He doesn't believe his son was abusive despite the evidence supporting that, murdering the whole family?!  "He told me he regretted some of the things he said to her,? said George, though he didn?t address Amy?s allegations specifically. ?He said he was horsing around. He was like that. But he said Amy took it seriously.? She obviously was right to take it seriously - he killed her.  And the fact that he said visitation would have prevented this, but he used a visit to kill them.  And he thinks that the man was a great father based on all the gifts he bought them and trips he took them on.  It sickens me, but I suppose he's got more grief and guilt about what happened then we can possibly imagine.  Some day he'll realize he maybe should have taken the threats and her statements seriously - maybe that's how this tragedy could have been prevented.

  • First... Ick!  This whole story is just crazy.

Is the father in too much shock at his son's actions that he is trying to come up with anything to justify what he did?  I hope he doesn't really think that Amy overreacted to his "jokes" about harming her after well, he kind of followed through with it.  I'm not sure that interview should have taken place.

  • how sad...I hate the self entitlement of some people.

I'm thinking this must be the case. I'm sure he is in a lot of shock and just in denial of what has happened. I don't think that anyone wants to think that their child is capable of this sort of thing. That being said, I don't think it is right to blame anyone else for his actions.

  • That is just so effing disgusting. I can't even believe it. I read one article in the Morning Sentinel in which someone who I think was identified as an uncle of the murderer was quoted as saying "if you keep pushing buttons, everything is bound to come to a head". I thought that was close enough to blaming the victim that I was outraged. This is just... I don't even have words for how wrong it is.

That's exactly the part I had the most trouble with.
