I had been contracting randomly all day on 5/29. They really didnt hurt and were irregular so I did not think much about it. I started loosing my mucous plug that evening but again, didnt think about it too much. Jamie and I went to bed around 9:30 and he asked if I had packed my hospital bag yet. No I have not packed my bag....I was focused on my PhD defense that was on the 31st. I could pack my bag after that.
I could not get comfortable in bed so I went to lay on the couch. I slept about 20 mins and woke up with regular contractions every 5-7 mins. I timed them for about an hour then decided to call the Dr about 1:00am. I went upstairs, woke up Jamie and tole him that maybe I should pack my hospital bag. It took him a minute to figure out what I was saying but he quickly jumped out of bed. He went to take out the trash, feed the cats and scoop the cat box while I packed the bag.
I was convinced that they would check me out and send me home, but we went to the hospital anyways. We got there about 2:00am and I was 2cm and 80% effaced. They had us hang out for a few hours to see if I would progress. I was really hot and miserable. I started throwing up around 4 and Jamie had to leave the room or else he would have vomited too. They checked me around 5am and I was dialated to 3 so they admitted me.
Once we got to a room, we made a few phone calls to the family and Jamie went to go eat breakfast. I got an epidural around 8am. OMG, those things are awesome! I emailed my boss that I was supposed to meet with that morning to let him know that we would not be going over my talk and that me defense would need to be postponed. At some point, they had to adjust my epidural because I had one spot on my left side that I could feel all the contractions and everything. They checked me again around 10am and I was fully dialated!! Since I was not feeling the urge to push yet, they broke my water and let me hang out for a bit to let the baby come down more. After about half an hour, I was ready to push.
The epidural was fantastic, but the way the baby was laying or something was putting a lot of stress on my hip....like right in the joint and no amount of epidural was helping that at all. I really didnt feel the contractions in my abdomen, but I sure felt them in my hip. If you looked up major suck in the dictionary, that would be it. It was awful. I pushed for about 30 minutes and Hannah Rose was born at 11:21am. She was 6lbs 2oz and 18 inches long. As soon as she came out the pain in my hip was gone. I did have a small tear but nothing major. THere was meuconium present so she went to the NICU for about 20 minutes, but she was fine so they brought her back so I could breastfeed.
We went to the Dr for the 2 week checkup and she is 6lbs 3oz and nearly 20 inches! The first few nights were rough but its getting better. DH is loving being a daddy and is willing to help with whatever Hannah needs. Things are very different, but we are loving it!

Re: Hannah's Birth Story
What a great story, thanks for sharing! I have to admit, reading everyone else's birth stories has me less freaked out about my own impending birth.
Enjoy your time with your new little love, and congratulations again!

Thanks for sharing. I've been through it, but still love reading them. I had the same issue with my left hip. I knew that going in though since DD had my hip torqued from about 16 months on. Not fun, so I feel you on that.
Enjoy your sweet baby girl and I can't wait to see pictures! Congrats!
