Re: Poll: Baby Registry

  • When did you register? after we found out I was having a boy. What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have? clothes. What items did you WISH you would have registered for? everything haha you get a coupon for a certain percent off to finish your registry (like for your wedding)What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby? aden and anais swaddle blankets. LOVE them! They have a line for target which are cheaper than the originals but still just as wonderful. They are huge, lightweight, and stretchy. We swaddled my monster baby in them until he was 6 months old. Dan hated all the other things made for swaddling and we found these to work the best. you get a great swaddle because of the stretch and 1 blanket changes sizes based on how you fold it so you don't have to keep buying more. They also make great nursing covers and cover a carseat wonderfully in the summer because they are so light. Other?

  • When did you register?  Around 16 weeks.  I wanted to register for gender neutral things so that I could reuse them with our next baby and I knew that if I knew the sex I would be tempted to get all girly or boy things.

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have?  A set of bottles.  Julia ended up not being a fan of the bottles we registered for.  I ended up having to go out and buy one of a bunch of different bottles until I figure out what she would take and then buying a set of those.  I recommend registering for one of a bunch of different types.

What items did you WISH you would have registered for?  The Summer Infant Activity Seat seen here:   http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3247729

Summer Infant Super Seat Booster/Infant Positioner - Summer Infant - Babies"R"Us

Julia loves playing in this seat and it allows me to get things done around the house.  I especially love it because she was able to go in it much earlier than the jumperoo or the exersaucer.

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby?  I am also a big fan of my ErgoBaby carrier.  It is impossible to walk the dog and push the stroller at the same time, I put Julia in the carrier and I am able to take them both our for a walk.  It is great!

Other?  I don't have this, but I have heard that the fisher-price projection mobiles are the best because they have a remote.  This way you can restart the mobile without the baby seeing you.  I would probably get that if we were to do it all over again!

  • When did you register? 20 ish weeks, my mom was out here and so we did it together

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have? nothing, we really didn't do clothing/diapers/etc...since I knew we would have to ship them from VT. I am glad I didn't register for play yards/exercise saucer. Anders hated them when my friend gave us hers as a hand-me-down!

What items did you WISH you would have registered for? A bouncer. My MIL bought us one when Anders was 3 months and it was great! He really wan't a fan of anything else "entertaining", and still isn't!

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby? Besides a maid service???

I agree with aden and anais swaddlers-Anders sleeps with one nightly and loves it. Anders also really liked his baby floor gym, a lot.

http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-Toy-201770-Wimmer-Ferguson-Stim-Mobile/dp/B00009ZIKH Best $20 ever spent. The kid loved it!

  • When did you register?  Around 25ish weeks

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have?  This one is hard because every baby is different.  Even if it was worthless with Parker it might be useful with our next.  Parker hardly used the exercaucer (maybe twice) or the floor gym (he would rather be on his tummy).  He also wasn't a juge fan of the swing or the bouncer.  He never slept (and still won't sleep) in the pack-n-play.  I got a TON of blankets and I haven't used any of them really.  We use a few that I like and the rest are in a trash bag stored in our basement.

What items did you WISH you would have registered for?  I wish I would have registered for my breastpump.  I bought one and it broke and I had to buy another one.  If I would of just got the medela one to start with I wouldn't of had to buy 2.  We just didn't want to spend $320 on it not knowing if I would even be able to breastfeed.  I wish we would of now though.  I also wish we would of registered for teething things.  And books.  Board books are great and we didn't have any.

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby?  I LOVE my boppy.  A pillow works the same, but the boppy is just so much harder and supports them more.  I also really like the disposable changing pad covers.  We still use these over the changing pad just so you don't have to wash the cover everytime something gets on it.  If you are going the disposable diaper route a diaper pail is a must also.  We got the diaper champ because I didn't want to have to buy refils everytime it got full.  We just use trashbags.

Other?  I know I have forgotten somethings, but I will edit as I think of them!

Registering is fun, but it is really overwhelming.  I got a book called Baby Bargains and took that with me.  It was really helpful when I was picking out the major things like car seats, strollers, mattress, etc.  They just came out with a new version.  It is less than $10 on amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Bargains-Secrets-furniture-maternity/dp/1889392405/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308583040&sr=8-1#_

  • I haven't even THOUGHT abotu registering yet.  Around here its customary that the baby shower be held after the baby is born, so I honestly haven' thought too much about it.  We will have to buy all the essentials ourselves before then anyway.

I ditto Baby Bargains though, I bring that with me any time we look at baby stuff.  It's quite helpful.

That's pretty interesting.  My nephew was at his baby shower but that was because he was born early and my family waited to long to have my Sister's shower.  I'm only thinking about it because we leave to California in about a month and his family is already asking us what we need.  Not sure if we should register before we go so we can point them in that direction or just let them get whatever and register after we get back.  Depending on when I can schedule my anatomy scan-we could know the day before we leave to Cali or have to wait until we come back.

Yeah, it sucks.  People do it so that the guests can "meet" the baby, but it honestly doesn't make much sense for first time parents in terms of getting the things they need before the baby.  One of my friends did mention that i should have mine before, so if someone wants to plan one for me earlier I am going to be all over that.  Then I'd just do a "meet and greet" after the baby is born.

We did a meet and greet with Parker.  He was born at the end of August and we had people over around Halloween.  It was fun.  Parker dressed up and so did a bunch of people who came.

This was a huge PITA with Wyatt. I was told by so many people not to go out and buy things, but he was due at the end of November, and I knew that my shower wouldn't be until January, so it wasn't a matter of just wanting to go and get stuff, I NEEDED it!! By the time his shower was held he was already a month old and I had gone out and bought just about everything I needed.

  • These are for Will obviously.  We haven't registered for the new baby yet.

When did you register?  25 weeks or so.

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have?  Clothes!  Everyone buys clothes anyway so we had a ton.

What items did you WISH you would have registered for?  A glider.  I wanted one so bad with Will but couldn't afford it.

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby?  If you formula feed, a three section formula holder for the diaper bag is awesome.  Also, the swing was a godsend for Will.

  • When did you register? When my mom said, "I know you are having a shower..will you please register already!"...So one night I did it all online with Krissy helping me with the "must haves."

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have? Blankets. Ella was too big for receiving blankets after about 1 day and handmade blankets are so much nicer and swaddle just fine.

What items did you WISH you would have registered for? More bottles. Dishwasher rack for bottles. I do use the microwave sterlizer and people told me I wouldn't.

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby? A boppy - bring it to the hospital with you. Nursing tanks. Nursing pads. (assuming you are nursing -- boppy even if you aren't). Bring a robe to the hospital and your own slippers. Gowns open in back -- robe is great for walking laps in the hospital. Oh and  you can never have enough baby towels. And the little spit cloths...we have a million and always want more.

Other? Don't buy a ton of diapers beforehand, thankfully we hadn't and Ella never really fit into newborn diapers. Also, go through all the clothes you get, organize by size and fill in the gaps - but again, don't go crazy on NB sized. Also, I didn't expect the number of gifts people bought after she was born.

We don't have a lot of "gadgets" and fancy stuff and are just fine. However, we have the rubber ducky that tells you if the bath water is too hot..that is awesome.

  • When did you register? Ummmm I think when I was like 16 weeks. We just went one Saturday that we were both free. We wanted to do it before Christmas so that people could buy stuff off of it if they wanted to.

What items did you register for that you SHOULDN'T have? I ditto the bottles. Mags hated the bottles we got so we had to go buy a ton more.

What items did you WISH you would have registered for? More sheets. I think we only got like 2 and we had to change the sheets all the time b/c she always spit up with her reflux.

What items did you love and is a MUST HAVE for new Mom's/Baby? A glider. I have spent so much time on that thing. Make sure it is a comfortable one. I love ours. A boppy. I loved mine. It had pockets to put things in. Mags used hers until she was like 10 months old... it was awesome. A mirror to go on the back seat head rest so I could see her when I was driving. It was a huge help so I constantly didn't have to pull over to make sure she was ok if she was crying.

Other?Stay gender neutral on the big things. The only thing we did girly was towels, burp clothes, sheets, etc. Everything else we can totally use for our next baby, no matter the gender.
