Dasher is to graduate from puppy training on Thursday.

The standards at PetsMart aren't high enough. She can do NOTHING other than walk on her leash and sit.  We have worked with her endlessly but she is determined to be a HORRIBLE, misbehaved dog.

  • I am sure there is a place closer to you but K9 University is amazing!  They took my mom's hellish dog and made him tolerable.  He seriously was a nightmare!
  • I also second K9 University. That's where we took our dogs for training. I also know several people who took their dogs there for behavioral issues. Very nice people, and I like their training methods.

  • Congrats? Sorry. We have a strong-willed dog. He understands all we ask of him, and is perfectly capable of performing said tasks, but only if he feels like it. Thankfully, he does like to please.

Isn't she still really young? We thought we were doomed, but it turns out it just took our dog a reallllly long time to grow out of puppy stage. Like three years.

LOL. Oh, I love her so much but yes, she is only five months old.  I have been working really hard with her but I think there are some trust issues between her and I that we need to resolve.  We are getting much better though and I am thankful I am at home so that we can spend time together!

She was a real show off this weekend - good lord.  We had DH's family over for Father's Day and Dasher kept jumping into the pool and rescuing everyone. So sweet.

Oh, we have the same issue. Tobey plays lifeguard. If you jump in and don't immediately resurface he FLIPS out. He jumps in to "save" you = you get scratched by his frantic digging at the water.

We are working on this. Unsuccessfully.

We now just tell people not to jump in if Tobey's watching.

  • If she's only five months and she's sitting and can walk on a leash I think she's showing some great potential!

This was Lily--she looked like she said "fvck you" every time I wanted her to do something.  We went to a training facility in Norman (off of highway 9 I believe) and they helped me work with her a lot more.  PetSmart is a joke...my smart one (Bear) didn't even do well there!

I agree!  A friend of mine got her Lab shortly after I got Maddux (also a Lab) and she did the puppy training at PetSmart with him.  He ended up learning what we called "the routine"--he would sit, shake, speak, and lay down...and always in that order!  It took her a while to break him of the routine and get him to just lay down, or just sit, etc., but he finally became very well behaved Smile.
I took Maddux to puppy classes in Stillwater and that lady meant business!  He started out acting like a fool, jumping on people, barking constantly, but once he graduated (and earned "Most Improved", btw Smile) he was MUCH more well behaved.

At 5 months though, it's good that she can sit and walk on her leash.  She's still a very young pup!

I've heard great things about them also.

It sounds like Dasher is still young and stubborn.  Our dane is very smart but he only does things when he wants to.  He was also a handful until about 20 months.  We had to make sure he got a ton of exercise everyday otherwise we would come home to mess (i.e. our windowsills being eaten).  Once he turned two, it was like he became a different dog overnight.  Hang in there!
