MIL's b-day was Saturday. My SIL invited us over to the IL's for a pot luck cookout that she wanted to plan. She lives at home, has a good job and is constantly bragging about how she is saving thousands for a house.
I was asked to make cupcakes so she didn't have to buy a cake. SO I got up early, baked for 2 1/2 hours and left to be at the cookout for noon. Then on the way she called to ask us to pick up hot dogs and buns because she forgot. We picked up a box thinking there are like 10 people there. I didhn't think anything of picking them up because I figured she must have been running around all morning decorating and cooking. We get ther, no decorations. She has 20 people there, 2 bags of chips that my MIL has bought for the house earlier in the week, a few veggies that someone else brought, and a small pasta salad that my other SIL brought. No hamburgers, no other sides, 2 bottles of soda, none of which she bought.
So she gets up and asked if anyone wants hot dogs and I am thinking that we definately did not pick up enough for everyone, especially if that's all there is to eat! It's now 2:30 and people are starving! So I ask DH to run to the store and pick up hamburgers and buns as SIL obviously doesn't think the lack of food a cookout is a problem. DH and I spent $100 on food for the cookout she planned and she didn't spend a single dime! She literally bought NOTHING for it. Then the hamburgers get there and I say "do you think we should start cooking?" and she says "yeah go ahead" I FREAKING HAD TO COOK EVERYTHING. Now please keep in mind that I had to ask my firend to move MY birthday plans for this cookout that she planned so I am already a little bummed but this just set me off. The rest of the family was very kind in offering to help, but at that point I just kind of wanted to get it done.
I am so frustrated that she "planned" this party and then put all the cost and responsibility on everyone else.
END RANT
Thanks for listening!
Re: SIL Grrrr...
Ew screw her. I definitely would have asked her for money when your DH went out to buy even more stuff.
A friend of mine pulled this crap two years ago for Memorial Day, she invited over 40 people to a big 'cook out', didn't buy anything herself, and then when people started getting hungry I asked her if she wanted to start grilling and she said "Nah, I don't want to spend the party on the grill, someone else can do it" I was so annoyed but hungry, so another girlfriend of mine and I stood over the hot grill in 100 degree weather cooking...grrrr, I feel your pain!

Wow. Seriously when stuff like this happens I wonder WTH was going through that persons head to make them think that it's okay to do that.
The other guests were lucky you and YH were there.
Trip to Prague & bring home furbaby when we get back
