Teachers - Positives and Negatives about your administrators?

Current and former teachers... what do/did you love and hate about the administrators of your building?

  • I'm in STL also.  What area/district are you in?

  • love- getting positive feedback, letting me know what they appreciate about what I do, asking what I need to get my job done

hate- getting the same feedback based on nothing, no matter what I'd do I have one supervisor who would say the exact same things every time, constantly asking teachers what they will do to change things and totally ignoring the type of children/families we deal with.  I get there isn't much you can do with parents with 10 kids and 3 jobs, but you can try and recognize that's part of the issue that we may not be able to overcome.

Love- positive and constructive feedback, understanding and empathy for the impossible job we do, standing up to irrational parents and letting us know that they are aware how irrational they may be, filtering new directives from the school board or the newest and greatest teaching "methods" that may be in the media now, respecting our decisions and involving us in major decisions across the school, keeping meetings within contract hours, putting all possible info. in emails rather than staff meetings, making sure we get our planning time for planning

Hate- admin. that are out of touch with our daily struggles and wish for 100 percent passing rates for all, admin. that lock themselves in their offices and don't know what is going on with the kids, disorganization, impossible requests and demands on our time, admin. who treat the parent as the customer as in they are always right even when they are not

  • I've been in my school for 5 years now and the administration has not been the same for 2 consecutive years yet.  It's very frustrating.  Us teachers don't know what to expect from year to year and just assume that whatever administrator we get is going to be short-term and doesn't really care anyway.  It's sad.  Morale is low because of it.
  • Flamingo - That stinks! Morale is super low at my school too. We have had the same administrator, who is pretty good, but the district still expects more and more from us, with less pay.

One thing I hate is how they spend all this money to implement a program, whether it be bahavioral or curriculum related, and they only use it for a year, then change. Ughh.

I'm in a school in a very affluent community in STL and people assume things about the district because of it. Some can be true but a lot isn't. We are struggling big time too.

  • Over all I absolutely adore all 4 of my administrators.

Pros: My principal will fight for you and is always on the teacher's side first. She does not tolerate parents who are in any way harassing her teachers. She is also really crafty with the budget- if you need something she will get it for you. My discipline vp is also fantastic, she does not take any bs from kids or parents. They are all really good with their feedback, it never feels like canned comments.

Cons: They forget sometimes what it is like in the classroom. I teach middle school and one of our administrators came from lower elementary and sometimes she really has no idea what she is talking about when it comes to behavior or management problems.

My admins have done a really good job at sticking with ideas they like. All 4 of them have to be onboard with something before they go forward with it. It is really nice to see them as a cohesive unit.

  • Love: Easy going, flexible, willing to work with teachers, handles all parental issues without questioning teachers decisions.

Hate: All three are new so there were some problems with enforcement of discipline/dress code. As well, communication was lacking at times.

They did send out a faculty survey that I believe opened their eyes. The principal promised to "declare war" on certain issues in September.

  • Our principal plays favorites.  Luckily (as of the end of last year) I was on the good side, but it bothers me that other teachers have such a rough time because of the different rules imposed on them.

I never see our superintendent so I don't have a ton of opinions.  He is very professional and level headed and I really respect that.

Hmm, I have a few guesses now.  I teach in one of the largest (if not the largest) district in the county and fee the same way

Love- very supportive of teachers; very committed to the children/ to the profession; cares about us as people and knows that we all need to put family first

Hate- when they have their mind set on something, there's no questioning it.
