Oil Cleansing Method for acne

Has anyone tried the oil cleansing method to wash their face?

I'm so fed up with the acne on my face, and I've tried everything. I've got an appt with a derm in august (the soonest they could get me in) but I came across this on another board, a lot of people swear by it.

Its a combo of castor oil and EVOO that you make at home.

Has anyone tried this?

  • I'm dealing with it too.  A few months ago I made an appt for a derm (I've never been since my parent's insurance didn't cover it) and it's June 30th...so don't worry; I'm sure it will come quickly!

I've never heard of the Oil-Cleansing method.  I wonder if that really works?  I mean, it really gets off the dirt/make-up and grime from the day?

Everything I've read says it does. DH and I are going to run out to get castor oil tonight... I figure I've got nothing to lose by trying it.

  • I went to the derm before the wedding and got a cream and pill, I ended up not using them because I couldn't use the cream since I was tanning and the pills made me pukey. I am going to have to read the links that Becca posted and maybe try it out.

Mine usually only gets bad right before my period and when I am in the chlorine. THe chlorine of the pool makes me break out sooooo bad!

I relate to so much of this.  Since I've never been to a derm, I don't know what to expect, except that I don't think I'm comfortable taking anything.  Whatever I get from them I want to be topical...but I don't want something that's going to make me not go in the sun, lol.

And yep, I break out badly pre-AF.  Otherwise I feel like I'm semi-decent.  Most of my breakouts are around my chin. I think it's from my phone and hands...I need to stop touching my face!

  • I've never tried that, and thankfully my skin has finally decided to shape up...but one thing I did find that worked for me was vinegar...someone had told me to get unpasteurized and do something with oatmeal and I didn't really understand it all to be honest but decided to try just the vinegar on a cotton ball, and it really worked for me, in fact when I do get a break-out now-usually stress or PMS related that is still what I do.

  • Somewhat similar to pp; my mom took me to someone who suggested a homeopath (is that the word? lol) route.

Wash with facial soap; microwave sweetened condenser milk fror ~20 sec, apply to face with cotton pad; let dry; remove from face with cotton pad wet with Everclear (yup, like the alocohol). Rinse with water; pat dry.

It worked really well when I was a teenager; but now the alcohol sounds so harsh, I haven't done it in years

  • I tried it- but I couldn't stand all that oil all the time. I felt gross inside from putting all that on my face. But I'm weird like that.

This works really well. I am just to lazy to make it all the time, so I haven't made it in a while. Dh hates when I do though- he says I stink.
I passed this one along to my 16yr old brother and it cleared him up within a month. So he swears by it too.

What kind of vinegar did you use? Just curious, because it sounds like it could work really well to get rid of some of the oil and crap!

The person that suggested it said to use unpasteurized apple cider, but I just use white distilled most of the time because it is a little cheaper than apple cider.

  • I just wanted to post a follow up.

DH and I both tried the oil cleansing method last night. I used 2 spoonfuls castor oil and 2 spoonfuls jojoba oil - which is the recommended starting ratio (1:1) for combination skin. Then I mixed it around in a plastic cup and applied it to my face and chest. I took the time to kind of massage it in. Then I put a hot wash cloth over my face for a minute to steam it. After that I wiped it off carefully using warm water and a wash cloth. Then I splashed my face with cold water.

I noticed immediately that my face seemed to be glowing more, which I thought was interesting - DH's face did this too. I tend to have oily skin so I did feel like it was a little bit heavy but I liked how my skin felt.

This morning I did it again after I worked out and I used 3 spoonfuls castor and 2 spoonfuls jojoba (more castor will remove more oil, which is what I felt I needed. if it's too sensitive you want to add more jojoba, which DH thinks he is going to try tonight). My face looks awesome today. I still obviously have blemishes but the areas of my skin that are clear look really clear. Same with my chest.

I'm going to keep doing it once or twice a day and I'll let you guys know how I make out in a week or two, but so far so good.

Apple Cider is better for your skin- distilled can dry you out faster. But it is all in personal opinion which you use.
