Landscape Question - WWYD?

*  I also posted this over on the gardening/landscaping board but:

We just had our front lawn professionally landscaped the middle of May.  Yesterday I noticed mushrooms popping up in the mulch, weeds in the new sod and slime mold in the mulch by the house.  The slime mold started about 2 weeks ago, I didnt know what it was until I googled it.  It basicailly looks like my dog puked in the mulch (yellow "slime") and then it turned to a white powder top.  Yes sick I know. The past 4 piles of this slime mold I just picked up with a shovel and threw it away, I didn't know what it was at the time and didn't think twice.

DH and I spent over 3k to have all the work done which includes the new mulch and new plants... would you complain to the company?

I know absolutely nothing about gardening or professional landscaping, so I have no clue if this is "normal" (it certainly does not sound like it is) or not - but if you are unhappy with the result - even several weeks later, I would absolutely complain.  I'd take pics and document what you have uncovered and what you have done, and very nicely contact the landscaper and explain why you are unhappy with the work.  It is their responsibility to explain if this is completely normal, and how best to manage it, or resolve the issue.

I think if you address it professionally then at the very least they have a duty, having done the work, to take a look at it and provide an explanation.  Perhaps it is something that is normal in your area due to the soil, perhaps they used a bad mukch, who knows.  I can't imagine that they should have an issue taking a look at it at the very least.

(That said, our HOA is dealing with the most unprofessional, awful landscaper in Maryland and I can only cross my fingers that you don't use the same guy)

  • You could call the company but I am not sure if they will do anything about it. If I remember correctly this is a fungus that can be contained in mulch. It is not something that they would even know was there until it appears.

FWIW...we have had this stuff a couple of times. But it isn't something that is a constant. I honestly don't know what factors contribute to is showing up. But it does just disappear on it's own after maybe a week?

  • fungus spores can be in commercial mulch & can blow in from neighbor's yards.  this isn't something your landscapers could have prevented or anticipated.
  • I don't know that anything can be done about the mulch, but I would consider calling them re the weeds in the new sod.  They may be willing to come out and do a treatment to kill the weeds or at least give you suggestions.
