Allison&Andy

Hey. I am taking the NIC on July 8th and was wondering how much studying you did prior to taking your test. I am trying to studying a couple hours a week but I am having some trouble getting motivated. Any tips or things I should know before taking it? TIA!

Re: Allison&Andy

  • Is this for the written or performance? If it is for the written I studied a few weeks before. I reread the purple book So You Want to be an Interpreter. I found that to be the best resource. I also had practice questions that I would read over. I found it hard to get the motivation until it was the week of the test.

For the performance I watched videos almost everyday. I don't know how it is for you in edu but I hardly ever got to work on my receptive skills. I also worked with a mentor to help me pass it. I was most worried about this portion of the test but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

  • It's the performance. I passed the written Oct 2009 (when I was still in school). I haven't done a lot of receptive things in education but I will work on it. Where did you get the videos to watch?

Also I wrote down things to remember- What's the dilemma? Who's involved? Effects? ect and taped them to the tv stand during the test. That way I made sure to hit all areas when going over the dilemmas.

Just remember to take your time and you'll do fine! Being certified has been the best thing to happen since I've been an interpreter-so many doors have been opened :)

  • Did you see the email yesterday from RID? I took my test at that time, and I missed a package from UPS yesterday that came from Alexandra, VA (where RID is). I've been worried sick!
