I don't know whether to page you here or on GP..I had to contemplate for a few moments! haha!

Ok, so, I'm in charge of dessert for my sister's baby shower, and she was recently DX'd with Celiac's. I can locate a bakery in the area that definitely is GF (because they are called "Gluuteny" and are a GF only bakery). But here's my question-do you find that calling places and asking if they accommodate GF restrictions holds good results or is it not worth wasting my time? Like...Sam's Club or Costco-do they even bake in house? I don't even know!

  • If she has Celiac's I'd go with the dedicated GF bakery just because of cross contamination. They would also be better since they specialize in making GF products and wouldn't just use a mix that anyone can use. Sam's club or Costco most likely don't do it (it never hurts to check) but even if they did, they probably wouldn't sterilize the products or have dedicated GF equipment. I've never had luck with any "chain" bakery like Publix or Kroger. 

    If you aren't opposed to baking yourself, Betty Crocker makes an awesome GF cake mix!  

  • LOL, I'm in the middle of coordinating a move out of state, getting the house fixed and put on the market and finding myself a job so that I won't be here forever and a day all alone....so I'm not going to be tossing any more coals in the fire by attempting to bake for her shower that's for sure!

    I was just trying to keep the price from being outrageous, and you can imagine that the GF bakery isn't the cheapest around. From what I've read it seems like some have issues with cross contamination and others don't, but that doesn't really help since I don't know what my sister can/can't do anyways. Oh well.

  • It never hurts to ask at places like Costco, etc. Another option is to get a cake everyone can eat and then get her a little GF cake or cupcake? Is she the type of person that would be upset by that? If it were me (and it used to be me until we figured out that gluten really wasn't the problem) I always asked people not to go out of their way and was always blown away when people went above and beyond to get special things for me. I know others that expect people to cater to their allergy. I understand that GF specialty items are really pricey! Sometimes other bakeries that aren't specifically GF but aren't a chain are able to accomodate GF needs, also (at a lower price than specialty bakers).  

  • Gah! I'm late to the party, as per usual. As musgral said, it's always best to go with a dedicated GF bakery. It's definitely worth it to ask around if you're not sure. There are a few bakeries around us that do GF, although they're not dedicated, they've taken the time to educate themselves on avoiding cross-contamination. It is tricky because flour just kind of gets in the air, so depending on her sensitivity, it would ultimately be best to go somewhere that's dedicated.

    The other option, as musgral mentioned, is getting a regular cake and then having a small GF cake or cupcake for her. This is what we did for our wedding, and it worked out well (and wasn't as expensive as getting a whole GF wedding cake). Do you have any friends or family who are bakers? Perhaps you could order a regular cake and enlist someone to help you by baking a batch of GF cupcakes. The Betty Crocker mixes are really good, that's what I use anytime I'm making a cake or cupcakes. I have not attempted anything from scratch yet. 

    I checked out the Gluuteny site and they look really great. In all honesty, it's worth the money. We've come to accept that GF baked goods will always be more expensive, but you can't really put a price tag on knowing what you're eating is ok, especially when it's a special occasion in your honor.

  • That's an idea. To be totally honest-she doesn't like cake or cupcakes all that much. I gave up on the cake idea but wanted to at least do cupcakes (and cookies, since it's too expensive to do just cupcakes from the GF bakery). So I'm not really sure she'll eat much of it at all. And now that I've said that.....wtf is the point, CCH?! GEESH. Ima have to think on this for awhile to decide if all GF desserts are worth it, or just a few, or if it doesn't even matter. My mom is doing the food, I'm assuming it's all GF, but now that you've got me thinking....I wonder if she's making something for just my sister that is GF friendly.

    Back to the proverbial drawing board (kind of). Thanks for the perspective!!

    Oh, and fwiw-I found a blog that outlined pretty much what I would love to do for her shower, which is bright pink and orange themed (all bright colors, really. My mom refers to them as 'sherbert colors" but I'm not really sure if that really fits or not). This woman got the cupcakes from Sam's Club and the pink and orange frosting is perfect (and are apparently Hannah Montana colors...go figure). I figured if Sam's could do that, I'd love to take advantage of that if possible!
