cat/pet people-which is less traumatic for the kitties?

Martin and I will be going away for 2 1/2 weeks in Sept./Oct.- for shorter trips we always use a pet sitting service (2 days max) who comes once a day and scoops litter, feeds them and plays with them.

My mother in NY (with 4 cats of her own) has offered to watch our kitties who are a year old while we are away because it will be for such a long time. We were thinking of doing a trial run with all the cats together over the 4th of July weekend but I am torn at what to do.

Two out of three of the kitties are easy going and one is afraid of everything.

WWYD?

Take the cats to NY to see how they interact with my mom's cats

Just book the pet sitter for 2 1/2 weeks because they would be better off in there own house.

TIA!

Re: cat/pet people-which is less traumatic for the kitties?

  • Hmm, I'm gonna say that I think it would be less traumatic for the kitties to stay in their own home. :/  I know that's probably not the easiest for you, but cats don't always adapt well to a new environment.  Plus, with 4 other cats (in a foreign place) things could get iffy and not only will they possibly not get along, but cats can get pissy.  Literally.  They could pee up your Mom's house or her cats may feel unwelcome in their own home and then start peeing out of spite.

Is there anyone else that could help you check in on them so you don't need the service come in every day? We can get away with having someone come in every other day or every third if plan accordingly with lots of food and water.  I'm sorry that I'm not closer or I would help!

And where are you going??? :)

  • i agree cats need to stay in their own homes. We took our kitty to a relatives house for a two week vacation and he was not the same when we brought him home. I also brought my parents cat to my place one time and he lost his poop literally all over my place. I would recommend keep them at home and having a friend/neighbor check in on them.
  • Our cat is very social and hates traveling, but loves staying at my in-laws with their kitty. You can hear them playing all night. If it were us we would use them for such a long period of time, but it really depends on the kitties dispositions.

  • I would hire a pet sitter. The car ride alone could freak them out. I would consider for that long of a time every three days have the cat sitter come by twice a day.
  • I'd vote for the sitter as well. Before I got the second cat, we left Simon alone for a week with our neighbor checking in on him. He has a food tower and drinks out of the toilet so he was set for the week and the neighbor really just gave him a little love each day. Now that we have to two cats, we'll leave them home alone for a long weekend now and then and I don't feel the need to have a neighbor come in. For the amount of time you're going away, I'd have someone come in every two or three days depending on what you are most comfortable with.

  • How does your cat do in the car? Some cats hyperventilate and panic in cars.. others love it.   If your cat loves the car, I would say it would be worth taking them to your parents for the 4th of July for a trial run.  My gut instinct says they're going to do much better in their own home, but on the off chance they all get along and your cat is okay in the car - it's worth at least trying it out first so that you know.
  • So kittens are pretty resilient but my vote is for the pet sitter in their own home.

  • Thanks guys! I will probably end up keeping them at home...Martin was leaning that way more than I was but you guys helped to make up my mind!

  • I would DEFINITELY leave them home with a pet sitter visiting.  They are much better being a little lonely, than traumatized.  A traumatic event with another cat caused my 8 year old cat to start urinating all over the house.  It went on for 3 years, with more treatments, cost and stress then you could imagine.   Cats are emotionally fragile.  I would really try not to mess with that.
