Who makes smoothies in the am?
What do you put in your smoothies? I want to make them for DH & I to drink for breakfast, but have never really made anything beyond margaritas or milkshakes. Do you find that you are full enough? How can I make it sweet without adding a lot of calories or sugar?
Re: Who makes smoothies in the am?
I make the green monsters. I pretty much make whatever is in the freezer:
1 cup of fresh spinach
almond milk
protein powder
frozen pinepapple chunks
mango puree
frozen banana
frozen strawberries, cherries, etc
Since my blender sucks, I let some of the frozen stuff thaw out for about 10 mins. I blend all the stuff together. It fills me up for a few hours. I usually have it with a piece of toast and pb and coffee.
I make one almost every morning. My standard has 1/2 ripe banana, a 1/2" slice of pineapple, whole lime (with peel), a small handful of spinach, a splash of coconut milk, hemp protein, and ice. I don't usually add any sweetener as the pineapple and banana have enough for me.
This morning's was 1/2 peach, 1/2" slice of pineapple, 1 carrot, 1 thin slice of red cabbage, 1/2 c blueberries, 1/2 orange, almond milk, and ice.

I make one for myself and DH every morning.
Contents:
1 banana
1/3 cup frozen mixed berries
handful of frozen strawberries
1/3-1/2 cup FF lactaid milk
1 scoop Optimum Whey Protein powder in Vanilla Ice Cream flavor
handful of ice cubes (I like a lot of ice to make it cold)
--I don't add ANY sugar or sweeteners. For a large cup, about 28 oz, the above has about 300-350 calories and 20+ grams of protein (which are key in my book to keep me full and satisfied).
I have always just done all frozen fruit/berries, ice, juice. I don't know why, but I feel like adding anything dairy would be strange...I only order all-fruit smoothies at Jamba too. I think I need someone to school me cuz I have a fridge full of greek yogurt at all times, and a need to increase my protein intake.
Anyway...random aside
You can find various brands of protein powder at grocery stores, health food stores, GNC, Costco, big box stores, and online. I buy ours online (VitaminShoppe.com) because we buy 10lb bags (cheaper and we use it daily). Also, DH researched the heck out of all the brands and we decided to use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey PP because 1) it is whey protein and not lactose protein (we are mildly lactose intolerant); 2) fabulous protein to fat ratio...can't beat 20+ grams of protein for 1.5 grams of fat; 3) easily digestible.
I do variations of all of the above, but usually add protien powder as well (I buy TJ"s brand in vanilla.)
I've been stuck on an Orange Julius version lately:
1/2 c. OJ
1/2 c. milk
teaspoon vanilla
I scoop protien powder
I packet of stevia
1/2 c. crushed ice
somtimes I add fresh strawberries or spinach...yummmmmm!
I'm also a fan of the green monster smoothies (check out greenmonstermovement.com for lots of recipes).
We've also used the vanilla protein powder from TJ's.
I just don't like the time it takes or the hassle of having to clean the blender every day. Also, smoothies never seem to keep me full enough until lunch.
