How to request vacation days off without feeling guilt trip

How to I go about requesting vacation days off without feeling the guilt trip by my co-workers?  I come in on time and leave late, try to get items checked off my list, and have the bulk of my work done before I leave on vacation.  But, I almost always get the guilt trip if I request off vacation days.

Please help!  Thanks!

Re: How to request vacation days off without feeling guilt trip

  • Are coworkers actively giving you guilt trips or is this your perception?  If they are making comments then just smile broadly and nicely say, "we all earn vacation days here - why wouldn't one take advantage of those?"  If they say, "Oh, I'm way too busy," then nicely respond, "I'd be happy to share some of my work processes with you which enable me to work more efficiently."

If it is your perception then you own that and need to refocus your attention.

Is there a perception that you are leaving critical work undone or letting important items drop when you go on vacation?  Make sure your responsibilities are covered and communicate to the rest of the staff who are impacted by your work on the status of your tasks, and when you'll be back in the office.

  • How long have you worked there?

Are you asking for time off that is in a particularly busy period for your workplace?

Are you asking for time off that everyone else probably wants off, too?

When you take time off, what is the impact to others?

  • And to follow on Sun and Kathy - do your coworkers NEVER take days off either?

  • I agree with another poster. Is this your perception? Or do they make direct statements? We have a use it or lose it policy... so nothing can really be said, but yes, of course people complain.

Do you all do the same job? Is it that they have to cover for you a bit while you are away and they do not like doing what you do?

    Maybe they are just jealous?

There are so many factors that can come into play here...

  • I used to feel this way when I worked for a hospital.  We had a use it or lose it program each year.  I came in on time and left late too.  No matter who was gone it was hard to fill their shoes because everyone had a high case load.  I had co workers who would make comments like "It must be nice to take a vacation."  I had to just let the comments go.  They were taking vacations too but with the stress level of that place people were very uptight when people were gone for more than a day or two.
