OBGYN Recommendation please!
I am considering finding a new OBGYN. I have been going to WHS for the past couple of years and while they are ok, I don't care for the doctor who delievered my son. I would prefer to have a doctor who has a high rate of successful VBAC (I don't feel like my doctor was too encouraging at my PP check and I felt I would automatically end up with a repeat c/s) and delivers at Mercy or Methodist (I delivered at Mercy before, but either is ok with me). Also, I live in Altoona and work downtown, so if they were around those areas that would be great. Thank you!!!

Re: OBGYN Recommendation please!
I have had the opposite experience at WHS...Dr. K seemed very pro-VBAC and seemed like she was trying to sway my decision that way instead of a repeat C. Maybe it's because of the type of c-section I had?
I've heard good things about the group with Dr. Hancock, Brown, Dornbier, etc. I'm pretty sure they have an office downtown. I actually have taught most of their kids (which is the main reason I choose them, LOL!), and know lots of people who go there.
For my yearly, I see Renee Baumhover through Iowa Health Physicians & Clincs, her office is at Methodist, in the Plaza. I went through them for my pregnancy, since Renee is just a NP, she wasn't able to deliver El, but I saw a lot of the other doctors there.
Dr. Paul Gisi- he was GREAT! Dr. DeJong- kind of liberal, but ok. Dr. Bedia, he actually delivered El, and was hilarious! Loved him! I REALLY liked Dr. Mintzer! SO nice!
While I don't have any experance with VBAC, I loved Iowa Health, They also have offices at Lakeview. There are enough doctors in the practice that you should be able to find one who will support you. #515-241-4000 is the Plaza office numbers, good luck!
I use OBGYN Associates and really like them. Dr Dornbier and Hancock are my favorites. Dr. Brown delivered my son but he is no longer at that practice (pretty sure he opened his own practice as I got a postcard ad from it). I was super impressed knowing that Dr. Brown did a special type of suture for my c-section that allows for me to try a VBAC this time even with just 6 months in between pregnancies. Dr. Dornbier has been supportive with the idea of a VBAC thus far. He said if everything progresses the way it has been we are good.
They have a Pleasant Hill, Ankeny, downtown and WDM office.

i think my response would probably be very similar to jennrs. : )
DM has a very low rate of hospital VBAC, regardless of what docs seem to be supportive of in prenatal visits. i strongly encourage you to attend some ICAN meetings or at least join their online forum. you'll find a great group of women who are highly knowledgeable and have successful VBAC stories. most of them have VBAC'd with the Iowa City CNMs (or at home with a CNM).
Similar, but you added stuff I totally forgot about! Your suggestion is even better than mine. :-)

I really appreciate both of you providing such good information to me! I sent you a PM back too Jennrs! I will definitely be checking out both of your suggestions!
He does, I only went to downtown offices, and I saw him a few times, I think I saw him right before I delivered, he was very gental too!
I didn't know they were changing to both. I like 3 out of 4 of the doctors a lot and really like the NP. The doctor who delivered my son I was less than impressed with. Lets just say after my c-section and I was being stitched up she was less than professional.
:-) Best of luck! Keep us posted.

Now I'm curious, who was it? You can pm me if you want.
It seems to me that WHS was the most often recommended in terms of entire group practice, so I'm sorry to hear you weren't happy with the one doctor. Do you think you could just successfully avoid him/her?
In terms of individual Ob/gyn, I went only to Dr. Mintzer and love him. When we were pregnant w/ G, Adam solicited the opinion of the labor/delivery nurses and he was the overwhelming favorite both in terms of bedside manner and, perhaps more importantly, delivery and surgery skills. He is far less invasive than many ob/gyns and would be very supportive of your desire to have a VBAC if it was a good medical decision.
The good news is that you can now get into him since he joined the iowa health staff (he is primarily at lakeview, but also goes downtown to methodist plaza every week I believe). He used to have his own practice which was an amazing experience, but nearly impossible to get into. The bad news is that you might have to see others in the practice. This isn't too bad though b/c i think they all have really good reputations, i'm just not sure what each of their stances are on VBACs.
Yes, Iowa Health Midwives and other midwives (homebirth) will see non-pregnant women for annual check-ups and such. :-)
