Vacation...

I can almost see the light at the end of the work tunnel to my vacation beginning July 2! Cannot. Wait.

We're going to visit some of H's relatives in Maine and New Hampshire for 10 days. I fell in love with the Northeast on our honeymoon and cannot wait to go back! This time we're taking my six-yr-old step daughter along, so I hope I still get some relaxation in!

Tell me about your most memorable vacations. Best, worst, whatever. I need some help getting through this week!

Re: Vacation...

  • So jealous!!!  I love to go on vaca.

  • Are you going to Portland by any chance?  We're headed there in less than a month and would love to hear what you all end up doing. So far we plan to go sailing and then do one of those whale watching tours (or puffins), but everything else is pretty much up in the air.

And I agree with you... I love the northeast!

  • Yay! I hope you guys have a great time!

We just came back from a week in Colorado. We went to visit family in Fort Collins - AMAZING! Bike paths, breweries, charming downtown, yummy restaurants, lots of green parks. We then spent a few days in Vail. The weather was wonderful and since it is off-season, it felt like we had the town to ourselves. It was beautiful. We almost cried having to come back to this heat.

It's the first time I didn't check my work email when I was away - I learned that crap still happens, but it'll all be there when you come back so you might as well enjoy the time off!  Enjoy - you guys deserve some R&R!

  • Have a great time!

Most of my vacations are memorable for one reason or another. Some reasons are better than others. ;)

  • That sounds like fun!

My most memorable was probably a cruise DH and I took just before we were engaged.  It ended up that we were in Jamaica over V day, best time ever!  The whole trip was great and I would LOVE to take that trip again.

  • That sounds like so much fun! I can't wait until I can take some time off.

Most memorable vacation was probably when we went back to Hawaii in '04. I hope our plans to go back next year hold up...I miss it.

  • Have fun on your vacation!!

I haven't really been on too many "real" vacations (mostly just weekend trips to somewhere close or to South Dakota to visit family). But my most memorable would probably be Breckenridge, Colorado. We went for a week last summer and we're going back for 10 days at the end of July. The weather is absolutely perfect! And like pp said, it's the off-season so it's pretty quiet. We go shopping, rafting, biking, hiking, and this year we're going to zipline, too. Last year, we hiked our first 14er (it was a 7ish hour hike) and it was so incredible to finally reach the summit (since I had major doubts that I could actually finish it). We're going to hike Mt. Elbert this year (the highest peak in colorado and the second highest point in the continental US!) I'm pretty excited since I've lost about 15 pounds since last time and I've been running, so hopefully it'll be a little easier than last year.

  • Snowful-- Not sure if we'll go to Portland or not. H and I tend to fly by the seat(s) of our pants, so all I know for sure at this point is that we'll be in Boston one day, and on a whale watching trip one day. This is the company we're using. I'll let you know how it goes!

OULaw03-- We *love* Ft. Collins! My best friend lives there, so we visit fairly often. We actually got engaged at Estes Park. So beautiful. Our favorite thing to do in FC is the New Belgium Brewery tour. :) Totally on the same page with not checking work email this time!

gingerfeathers-- You can't say something like that and not tell a story! :)

jesseandbri-- I've never been sold on the idea of a cruise, but some friends of ours are trying to talk us into it for next year. I dislike the idea of everything being pre-planned, but it does sound pretty relaxing.

  • I think it a cruise is a great way to see a few places all very quickly... That is why I like them.  We will one day return to Grand Cayman but by plane, so we have more time there.  If you do one, I suggest doing all excursion bookings outside of the cruise line.  It saves you money and gives you more options.  Also, check out Cruisecritic.com....  Great reviews by real people!

Have fun on the whale watching trip,  I hope you get to see a few!  That sounds like something right up my alley.

  • Speedy - We went on our first cruise this past January - like you, we were kind of...ehhhhhhhh...but IT WAS FABULOUS.  Let me say - it rained the ENTIRE TIME - and it was still soooo fabulous.  The food was fan-freaking-tastic.  I can't wait to cruise again!!!
  • kayleeb-- I've been to Colorado a million times, but never to Breckenridge. I've heard great things from everyone who's been, though. A friend dragged H and I on an 8-mile hike just outside of Estes Park last year, and I almost died. There was a waterfall at the end, so that was pretty cool, but I decided that hiking really isn't my thing. :)

I don't mind hiking, or walking long distances, but the altitude is what kills me. When we were in Glacier and Yellowstone, it could be flat and I would be dying. I can normally walk forever without problems, but I just felt like I couldn't ever get a good breath! When we drove into Kansas, I felt the air again...it had WEIGHT to it, and I could get a good grab of it when I inhaled. I love the mountains, but my lungs don't!

What ports did you go to on your cruise?  We have never been and have that "ehhh" feeling but everyone raves about them.  Guess it's time to try one out!
