Those who have built houses
DH and I are seriously considering building a house in the next couple of years. We are starting to do some research, and actually may purchase a lot soon if a few factors work out. What I am wondering is what builder you used and if you would recommend them. Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated! If you would rather PM me or message me on Facebook, that's fine, too.
Thanks!
Re: Those who have built houses
We too are planning on building/contracting a house. But we plan on doing a Wisconsin home. They're ranch style houses. I think the #1thing is to find a piece of land or spot and jump on it. Do you know where you want to build? What style of house you want? And then I'd research builders in that area. Thankfully, my family owns a construction company, and we can do a lot of the work ourselves. Like dig a basement, and set the house.
hope this helps a little
We used Tim Stolp from Timber Ridge Homes. We are so incredibly happy with the way that everything turned out, from the initial meetings to the very last walk through. We were happy with each of the contractors she uses and their wood workers are AMAZING. He was able to point out where we could save money, and worked with our budget to make the plan a reality. And... this is practically unheard of in home construction, but he came in UNDER budget in the end. Tim also worked very hard to make sure we were 100% happy in every way. If he thought that we were unsure of something he wouldn't hesitate to schedule an on site meeting the very next morning. I really can't say enough good things about him. I could go on and on.
For us, we found a plan we loved and had to find a piece of land that would fit it. However if you don't have your heart set on a certain plan/layout, that shouldn't be a problem at all. (There are some great lots for sale in my neighborhood. lol!!)
My DH was the general contractor for our house so we didn't use a "builder" per se, just individual people.
I think buying a lot sounds like a smart idea, you can always sit on it for a while and think about the house plan. Where are you thinking about building? There are lots of nice lots for sale in our neighborhood!

My cousin was the general contractor, similiar to CyGal's husband and it saved them lots of money. However-I think it was alot of work.
My aunt/uncle own Lynn Ross Homes. The homes are absolutely beautiful, but a little more per square foot. They actually build All-His's gorgeous house :-)
