Tell me about your suburbs!
Hello all, I'm visiting from the Colorado board if you don't mind:)
DH is up for a job in downtown Houston, inter-company promotion. Things move VERY fast within his company so if he gets it, we'll be looking at moving specifics within the next couple of weeks and I just want to have some ideas in my head in case this happens.
So, pimp your part of town that is an easy-ish commute to downtown...
Re: Tell me about your suburbs!
Hmmm, I would have to say that there's no suburb that is 'easy' for a drive to downtown at the 7-8am hour or home at the 5-6:30pm hour(s). Houston traffic isn't wonderful. That said, we do have some great suburbs! I particularly like the Sugarland area or the Cinco Ranch (Katy) area. I grew up in the Spring/Klein area and like it there as well.
If a shorter commute is important to you, try looking at the Westbury/Meyerland/Bellaire area.
What's your budget? Do you have kids?
Rayskit10 will be here soon to pimp The Heights.
I live a bit north of I-610. My husband works downtown and has a easy, non-freeway commute. It's a slightly older neighborhood but the houses are decent sized and the schools are on the upswing.
Most people recommend renting first for a bit, especially if it's going to be a quick move, that way you can get to know the area before you settle on a permanent location.
No kids, budget is around 200k, but coming from a higher COL, I'm still in awe of what you can get for that down there! It's absolutely ridiculous. I grew up in OKC where housing costs/quality are similar, but Colorado definitely has much higher housing costs!
We're unsure on renting vs. buying right now, the houses are so cheap I'm not sure we could bring ourselves to rent for what rentals cost these days.
We are up in NW Houston (Cypress). Although I love the area I would say stay away if you have to commute to Downtown. You do not want to travel down 290 towards downtown in rush hour traffic. The Woodlands are beautiful as well.. but again, I wouldn't want to travel 45 into downtown either (unless you are coming from the southside -- ie: Pearland, League City, etc). Now that I've laid out the bad areas for traveling...
Here is the good. We originally came from the Katy area (West Houston). Now that I-10 has more lanes it is much easier to travel. I don't see it getting backed up much anymore. So, Katy would be a wonderful place to look! Great schools, good community especially if you have kids.
Pearland and Friendswood are also nicer areas on the south side.

~~PGAL/PAL Always Welcome!~~
We just moved from Montrose, about 3 miles from downtown, to Katy, about 20 miles from downtown. I also work downtown, DH and I carpool, but days we don't my commute takes me about 30 minutes, with driving in the pay toll lane. Otherwise it might take me 45 or a bit longer...but I hate traffic and will pay the money.
I loved Montrose, it's close to everything, unique, great people and great food. You might be hard pressed to find even a condo under 200k let alone a house that won't need a lot of work.
Houston is pretty spread out, so if you want burbs I would suggest Katy. It has really grown on me. There are tons of bike trails, we have found some really great non chain restaurants. There are lots of family friendly neighborhoods if that is what you are looking for.
I would also look at The Heights and Oak Forest/Garden Oaks area too. They are more affordable than Montrose and not more than 10 miles from downtown.
I would suggest renting before buying though. Because Houston is so spread out there are TONS of areas, each unique. We used a nestie realtor, BPaullo...and took her all over town, but she is great and found us the right neighborhood for our needs.
Thanks ladies! I finally was able to get on the website and see the exact location, of course the day I'm trying to find it the website is being weird (or my work network, who knows) but DH's job area will be near where 290 hits 610, so I guess just northwest of downtown.
We'll just have to see how this all pans out over the next week and I'll be looking at both rental and purchase options!
Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and The Heights are all very close to that.
We just bought a house in Spring Branch. It's definitely a neighborhood in transition but we love it.
