Jane Austen

As sad as this is, I've never read a Jane Austen book.  I'd like to, but I don't know where to start.  Any recommendations?

Re: Jane Austen

  • Well, your choices are pretty limited as she only wrote 6! I really like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, though Emma is a fun one too.
  • I'm a sucker for Pride and Prejudice. It may take a while to get used to the wording, but it is one of my favorite books.

  • I actually took a class devoted to Jane Austen in college.  It was really fun - we learned about period fashion and even had an English country dancing lesson!  Anyway, I've read all of her novels and short stories.  Pride & Prejudice is my all time favorite, I would definitely start there.

I think Northanger Abbey is fun, and Sense & Sensibility and Emma are both very popular.  I also like Mansfield Park because it is quite different from her other books (although if I'm not mistaken, I think this is generally considered her least popular novel.)  I'm having trouble remembering all of Persuasion but I think I enjoyed it, too.

  • Persuasian is the one with Anne (?) who meets up with the man she once rejected because her embarassing family told he wasn't good enough for her. I enjoy that one too - it feels like a much older book than some of the others, KWIM?

Who am I kidding? I like 'em all.

  • I love Emma and Mansfield Park. They're very different from each other and Mansfield Park is really different from her other books but I love it.

  • Pride and Prejudice, definitely.
