Red belly button- normal?

The past few nights giving Brody a bath I have noticed that the underside of his belly button looks pretty red. His umbilical stump fell off pretty early at one week exactly so it has been off for a good four months and healed well. I don't remember ever seeing it be red before. It doesn't seem to bother him at all and he doesn't complain when I touch it. Think its okay? Can belly buttons even get infected? Here are a couple pics but its hard to see...

  • You'll want to take him in. This exact same thing happened to Ana and actually we had to go back three separate times because it kept happening. They'll put this silver something stuff on it and give you an antiB cream for it. They'd also culture it each time to be sure it wasn't worse than it looked.

  • I agree with Mrs. Reem, I would get it checked out it looks like it could be an infection.

  • Ugh. I'm glad I asked- thanks girls! I am cautious about taking the kiddos in for any little thing now because our copay went up to $20. Of course I will take them for anything the needs attention but hate to just run in and be told its nothing you know?

Mrs.Reem did they say that the redness was caused by an infection in Ana's case? Did the silver stuff hurt her at all? Why did you end up having to go in three times? I will call in the morning to get him in...

  • yes, it was an infection and like you, it was around 3-4 mos. It doesn't hurt them. We had to go in three times because it kept coming back. Just when I thought it was better it would flare up again. they warned me that might happen.

  • El had to have the sliver stuff put on, at her 2wk check up, because after the stump fell off, the blood vessil wasn't competely closed off. I'm not sure in Ana's case but El has a dark 'spot' now, from the sliver stuff, and now, she LOVES to sick her finger in her belly button, because I tried to clean it to many times, Just an FYI! I hope his gets better soon!!
