Kasi/Books

I was thinking in the shower this morning - if you like Lisa See, you should check out Amy Tan's books - she wrote The Joy Luck Club (you probably saw the movie, the book is phenomenal). I also loved The Kitchen God's Wife by her. She is a great writer and you learn a lot about Chinese culture (I believe, unless she makes it up).

I also really love John Irving, but his older stuff, I have not enjoyed his newer work.
I love A Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meaney, The World According to Garp if you have not read them. They have similar themes but John Irving really does an amazing job of character development.

Also, I liked Fannie Flagg's books - she wrote Fried Green Tomatoes (again you prob saw the movie, the book is so much better). I also loved Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man.

Just some thoughts - I think we might have similar taste in books :-)

SO glad to hear this! I LOVE that movie and have had the book on my list to read for a long time. I really need to get around to it. I think it will be my next book purchase.

This is my favorite book! I agree with you though - I'm not a fan of his newer books. (His last one was very strange.)

I know, right? It was creepy (Last Night In Twisted River, right?). Also, while I love Irving, it's all the same story - boy with mommy/daddy issues becomes a writer, has an inappropriate/early intro to sex/women, etc etc. I think I'm done with him, but I loved his older stuff (just not Hotel New Hampshire, that one was just...too weird even for Irving).

I tried to read this in high school and could not get more than halfway through it before I gave up. I don't even remember what it was about, just that I was super bored. Maybe I should give it another shot?

You should. High school might not have been the best time. It is a really interesting story.

  • Also, has anyone read Barbara Kingsolver's earlier books? The Bean Trees, etc? I loved those. I did not love Poisonwood Bible, but it was ok.

  • I read the bean trees a long time ago and maybe one other by her but not the poisonwood bible.

I've read and liked the Barbara Kingsolver books I've read. I don't think I've read the ones you mentioned, though.

  • I have only read the Poisonwood Bible. I liked it and she is on my list of authors I would read other books by. I just haven't managed to pick up any of her other books.
