Would you pay for recipes?
Yesterday, it came up on What's Cooking? that an Etsy seller was stealing bloggers' photos for her Etsy store where she was selling recipes for $3 each. We don't know if she was also stealing the bloggers' recipes but I think it's insane that anyone would pay $3 to be emailed a .pdf of a single recipe based on a title and photo. Some other sellers had recipes for $5 each. And they had buyers!
Would you buy a recipe off Etsy for $2-$5?
Re: Would you pay for recipes?
Absolutely not. I will say that I might be willing to pay for certain chefs' recipes, even on an individual basis (for example if Barefoot Contessa has a new cake recipe and she will sell the recipe for 3 dollars as part of a fundraiser or something, since I know I like BC's cake recipes.) But on etsy? no way.
It's not the paying for recipes that's weird to me - I mean, isn't that what a cookbook is? But it's the idea that on etsy I would have no idea if it was stolen from a blog (which it sounds like is likely) or if I like the recipe or how hard it is etc. With a cookbook I can pick it up and look at it before committing to it. And if I dont like half the recipes in it the other half is still good.
no
almost any recipe is a take off/improvement of someone else's recipe anyway.
That whole mess was mind-boggling to me!
I think it's clear where I'd stand, but no, I wouldn't purchase a recipe off of Etsy.
Yeah, I just don't get why you would buy a single recipe you aren't allowed to see before buying when there are SO MANY free ones out there. Anyone who is savvy enough to use Etsy should be savvy enough to google the title of an interesting recipe and find a comparable one for free.
Cookbooks are totally different, IMO, since you're buying a collection, you can preview them and they often come with tips, stories, tons of photos, etc.

Ditto. I always have a hard time buying a cookbook these days b/c there are usually only two or three recipes in a whole book that interest me.

This, exactly. Usually, I like to look at the cookbook before I buy it to make sure that I will use more than one recipe.
Same for me, I always go to a search first any way. I would never pay for a recipe like that.
Jenbrian, having fun with the "quote" button? hehehehe
I think it's a serious shame that Etsy hasn't done anything to take the shop down yet. And I know that the WC girls are talking about Bakerella's legal team, and Bakerella's certainly the best bet for action being taken because she is such a big name, but isn't she off having surgery right now? I highly doubt she's going to pay this any mind for awhile yet.
I question the intelligence of anyone who purchases a recipe on Etsy, but I'm damn tempted to start a shop of my own with my crappy blog photos and posts.
Yeah, Bakerella is the biggest name she stole from (except one girl said one photo was from Smuckers) but you're right about her surgery--her life situation does not put this at the top of her priority list.
I think it's awful that Etsy hasn't done anything yet. Everyone on WC plus people bloggers are reaching out to via FB and Twitter have reported her. I myself reported the Bakerella post with a link to Bakerella's photo--it's OBVIOUS. If Etsy doesn't do something about it, it will disgust me.

Oh that's right, I forgot about the Smucker's photo! You would think they'd be interested as well.
I'm also shocked by how utterly stupid this woman is, thinking that a slight change to the photo and the fact that it's all posted online makes it hers and free for her to use. The WCer who discovered the issue isn't always a favorite of mine, but I loved the feedback she left on the Etsy shop. I wanted to do the same, but I don't want to give the woman even $3 of my money. I hope the feedback is enough to deter potential future customers.
I don't know the details of this- but from the sounds of it, if Etsy doesn't take control of the situation and clean it up quick, I think Etsy could soon be very much like Ebay- full of 'scammish' types of sellers. Which is unfortunate.
You have to think that there must be more than one etsy seller pulling off this sort of stunt in one way or another, if not selling recipes, selling a pattern of some sort, etc.
