anyone had a crown put in? (dentist)

So I went to the dentist today for the 1st time in 7 years. I know, that is horrible. With combo of moving and no dental insurance, it just didn't happen till now which I am SOOO regretting.

Anywho, aside from a few other things, I have to have 2 crowns put in on my top back molars... I watched a video on what they do but I'm just curious if anyone can give me personal experience.

And dear lord all this stuff costs a lot! Even with insurance! I'm gonna be broke for a while. :(

 Thanks!

They basically grind down your tooth to a stump to hold the crown.  Then they take a mold to have a crown made.  In the mean time, you wear a temporary crown until the real crown is done. It is so spendy and super annoying.  I hate my teeth!

  • I had one put in last week.  I know people complain about the procedure but aside from hurting my wallet I didn't think it was that bad.

All this as a result of losing my retainer.  I'm so pissed at myself.

I have had two.   It really isn't that bad!!  It IS super expensive though and time consuming.  Otherwise it is okay.  I, too, hate my teeth.

  • DH just had to have one.  Our dentist has the machine that makes the crown in his office.  He did not have to wear a temporary.  He read a magazine while they made it.  The entire thing took about 2 hrs.

I was SHOCKED how expensive it was.  I though what he told me was BEFORE insurance...  No such luck!

  • yeah this dentist makes them in office while you wait too.

With insurance my part of the payment for 1 crown is $661. and I have to have 2!

  • Y'all are scaring me. I think I need 2 crowns and I looked up the price on the internet and it said that it could be anywhere from $500-$1500 per tooth. Is this the right ballpark? I wonder how much it will be after my insurance.

18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

  • Mine was about $1000 for a replacement.  My original came loose and cracked, so I had to have a replacement made.  Not sure what the original crown cost was.  I was in college and my parents footed the bill.

In most cases that is after insurance coverage.  It's not cheap and something that is covered at the least amount on most dental plans DMO or PPO.

  • Our COPAY was $700 and change...  don't remember exactly, but just over $700.... for 1..  and I think we have good insurance.  Heck, I only paid $280 for a BABY.  That was prenatal, birth, hospital, pediatrician, EVERYTHING.
  • Yeah, it's ridiculous. I'm working up the nerve to go to the dentist and get an estimate for the three (!!!) I need. I had root canals done a couple of years ago and have been coasting along with crown build-ups since then... we ran out of money and were both unemployed so it wasn't in the budget. I at least want my oldest one done, the others don't make me as nervous for whatever reason.

Root canal + crown = spendy spendy.

  • I hadn't been to the dentist in a couple of years (gross, I know) and my tooth cracked so I had to go in right away. I wound up with a root canal and 2 crowns and it was incredibly expensive WITH insurance. It helped me understand why some people have really crappy teeth. If people can't afford dental insurance how the heck are they going to pay for things like this?

Thanks for the reminder - I just called and made a dental appointment!

  • I have 2. It's not so bad. Just really exspensive. With a root canal and 2 crowns, my parents paid about 3000 bucks to get my grill fixed 9 years ago. That was with insurance. This was before they made them in the office (fancy!) so maybe it is cheaper now.

Good luck and remember to floss! Geeked

  • over the past 5 years, we've paid about $9K OUT OF POCKET (we had no dental coverage) for my teeth.  i definitely recommend going to a dentist who has the crown-creator-machine in the office.  temporary crowns are the WORST.

maybe not on the back, but i have a front tooth crown, and a temp crown on a front tooth is about as helpful as (insert not helpful item here).

having dental work done RIGHT will save you a lot of money down the line.  trust me, i had about 8 teeth's worth of crappy dental work repaired.  my aunt is a hygenist, and agreed with everything my dentist did.  it's not like he was making up things i needed to have done.

  • aww, thanks!

i had better, for what we paid for it ; )

one of my front teeth got broken right below the nerve during softball practice when i was 14.  i have had a several crowns on it over the years, and i don't know if it's the dentist or the technology getting better, but i am FINALLY so happy with the way my teeth look.  i look at my bridals and it makes me want to cry.

  • I had two crowns put in several years ago and I hate it.  That being said, I believe the reason why I hate it so much is because the dentist sucked.  I should never have allowed him to work on my teeth.  If only I had known any better.  Anyway, I've had one of them replaced and want to get the other one replaced too, but the cost is holding me back, at least for a little while longer.  My current dentist is great.  Sorry if this is besides the point, I just had to vent.
