Dexter update

His toe was broken and dislocated. This MAJORLY complicates things...

They splinted his toe and pretty much his entire foot to keep him off the toe. This means his numerous lacerations and stitches have to be covered, which means they won't heal as well. And also means we have to go in every couple days to get the bandages changed (because of the splint, David can't do it himself, boo). He is on 3 medications (antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory, and pain meds), and an activity restriction for at least 4 weeks.

Dog toes are kinda like human toes, as in when they break it's pretty hard to do much about it. Since it's dislocated, they tried to put it back, but obviously he has to walk on it sometimes, and it could move, no matter how we splint it. So it will end up one of two ways.... (1) it doesn't move or only moves a little and heals and it just might ache sometimes, but won't hurt him and he'll still be able to walk. (2) it lames him, he refuses to walk on the foot even once the toe is healed, and the toe has to be amputated, which will be another long recovery process, but he will be able to walk and use the foot.

Vet bill was huge, and we'll obviously have lots more with all the follow ups and a possible second surgery if it has to be amputated.

Neighbor semi-fixed the fence. We will see if it works once Dexter is healed. Which could be months.

Re: Dexter update

  • Oh my goodness, Cole... I'm so sorry... poor Dex... poor mama cole... Hang in there. If it helps, my Cricket (black lab) was hit by a car when she was 2, severed her femur from her shin bone... after a huuuuge vet bill and moooonths of recovery, 11 pins and plates (that are still in her leg), she runs like a champion and you'd neeever know the difference. She is six and a very happy lab... hang in there...

Stupid neighbors (it was my neighbor's fault about Cricket's accident)... I hope the fence thing is taken care of but still... a dog that can/would do that kind of damage... not good.

    Hugs

  • Poor Dex. I hope he heals well and doesn't have any problems using it in the future. I hope you called to report it, and the expenses that came from the negligence. Lots of love from our doggies to yours!

  • Ouch... that sounds painful! Sending some get better soon vibes his way.

Have you and David looked into pet insurance at all? We have it for Finn and in situations where he needs surgery or anything other than a routine check up/proceedure they will reimburse us 75% of the total bill. I know vet bills can get crazy expensive, and the insurance cost is about $30 per month. For us it seemed worth it. Maybe it's something you'll want to look into?

  • poor guy, and you! Sorry to hear about the toe, good luck with the healing process!

  • Sending speedy recovery vibes!

I will second the pet insurance. We got it for our cat because we thought about what would happen if he needed something and we couldn't pay for it. It's been worth it for us, even though we've hardly used it. Ours is through VPI.
