Really cheap cell plans?

I am trying to help a soon-to-be 18 yr old starting out on her own.  She has no assistance from parents so I've been pseudo parenting her for the past several months ie filling out her financial aid forms, college apps, helping her get a job, etc.  She is going to need a cell phone when she goes away to college in August and I really have no idea how much cell plans are these days since H's work pays for his and I'm like an add on for his plan.

Does anyone know of a really cheap cell phone plan or if there are any companies that do specials for college students?  She has an old blackberry phone (just no sym card or anything) so I don't know if there are certain plans that can only be used for those or what.

TIA!

Re: Really cheap cell plans?

  • Verizon has a deal right now that has unlimited talk, text and web for $50 a month. The downside is that they only have 3 crappy phones to choose from but you can't beat the price & service you will receive. The program is called Unleashed.

  • Metro PCS has cheap deals and no contract needed

  • Metro also has crummy service depending on where you are at. (they work best in Large cities)

I know Tmobile, while their service isn't much better than Metro's has very reasonable plans as well.

How many minutes a month does she think she needs, does she really need internet on her phone? these are questions I would start asking and then really look into plans from there.

  • Thanks all.  I am def going to check out that Verizon unleashed thing.

I'm not sure how many minutes she will need or whatever, but she doesn't own a computer so having internet on her phone will probably be helpful until she can afford to buy a computer or laptop.

The pay as you go type plans make me personally nervous because I think it will be hard for her to budget her money if she doesn't know how much to be expecting her bill to be.  But maybe I'm just too unfamiliar with those type of plans.

If anyone else has any recs, let me know.

  • I'm not sure of your relationship with her, but have you considered adding her to your plan?  Normally, it's just a $10 add-on for basic cell service.  She could pay you up front for a year, six months or whatever.
