XP from Bump: Tell me what to expect putting our condo on the market

With a cat and a baby. Indifferent

As a reminder, my DH is at training right now so he is out of the picture for helping me through this process. We received word last week that we are moving to another city in approximately 3 months (which we are happy about for various reasons, but now the stress of selling/moving/packing needs to begin.)

My concerns:

1. No one will want our place due to the cat (large population of people who have allergies to them.) I keep the condo as clean as I can, but lets face it, I don't have loads of extra time to clean. And there is no one who could temporarily take her. Part of the problem with living here is that we don't have family in the region.

2. People will want to come when the baby is sleeping. Her bedtime is 7. But usually I start her night night routine around 6:15/6:30...Also, I am off on Wednesdays. Should I start taking her to daycare on that day so the place is free for visits?

Help! Any suggestions? (I have heard things like don't cook to avoid smells in your place, but I am not sure what I would feed LO. She can't try peanut butter yet and I feel like PBJ would be the ideal back up meal in this type of situation.)

Re: XP from Bump: Tell me what to expect putting our condo on the market

  • A few thoughts:

    1. Can you hire someone to come in and clean once a week on a temporary basis? That may help with the cat hair and just generally keeping the place clean while it's on the market.

    2. You can talk to your realtor about this, but I think you can put a note in the listing that lists the times the condo is available to be seen (i.e. 9 am - 7 pm). Most people call before they stop by, so if you're home on a Wednesday, you could just leave the house when a realtor calls.

    3. I don't think you need to worry about cooking unless you're making something very smelly.

  • We sold our condo last year with a cat.  We cleaned the liter box every morning and put an air freshener next to it just in case.  As for the cat, I am sure she was under the bed everytime someone came by.

When we looked at houses, we did go after work - so we started around 5:30-6 pm.  We did look at houses while parents were cooking dinner.  It is really unavoidable.

Our realtor had a service where agents would make "appointments" to see the place and we would get an automated call that someone was scheduled to come between x and y time.  90% of the viewings came through this.  We left for all of those, but I understand that sometimes that is not possible.

  • Thank you! I appreciate the suggestions and hope. I really am concerned about the cat thing... But others have clearly done it, right? Tongue Tied
