Re: Man robs bank to get health care in jail
i kinda feel bad for him.
ETA: Ames and I just had this discussion, I couldnt be a judge. I'm too emotional/compassionate. In this guy's case, I'd give him the longest sentence possible to help him out.
My first thought is that he probably won't make it to 3 years in jail because of the federal minimums on criminal sentencing structure- he didn't steal enough money.
My second thought is that this guy knew he'd get publicity out of it, why else would he be doing interviews? If he was legitimately in it for the health care, he'd be in jail and be happy with his treatment. He's making a point, and probably trying to garner sympathy from a judge/ jury/ sympathetic community member. I hate it when people do things like this.
Finally, even with his issues, he could probably get a job with benefits. McDonalds gives benefits to full time employees and if he's significantly hurt, he can have accommodations made to his job under the ADA. The issue is that he needs to take the first step and try to get a job and try to help himself. Instead, he robs a bank...
IDK, maybe I'm snarky this morning but he's an idiot and I hope they suspend his sentence.
Stand up for something you believe in.

I dunno, I kind of see where he is coming from. I see how few healthcare options so many low income people have, even if they do have a job. So few places offer benefits, and even when they do, a lot of people still can't afford to utilize them and have that money taken out of their paycheck.
And even with some indigent state health care options, the only thing covered is very basic care. Which is better than nothing, yes, but if someone has serious health care needs (such as surgery), you'd be shocked at how much they really are SOL.
I havea client who has needed to havea hernia removed for the past 3 years, and no one can/will do it, and she can't afford to have it done on her own.
So whether he's ligimately looking for healthcare or trying to make a statement, I think it's a valid concern. And it's not like correctional health care is the best in the world, if someone's opting for that, well then they must be pretty desperate.
And I think that's part of what pisses me off about this whole ordeal.... those with the cash get the benefits. And with our economy the sh!thole it has been lately, it's truly not fair. Just because someone doesn't have a job or a steady income in no way should dictate whether or not they get medical attention. Grr... I know it's not the best, but I think Canada has it right, man...

I'm with MB, it is sad one would think to do this to get healthcare. Middle class/lower middle class has so few options, and he probably would get better healthcare in jail. Plus 3 hots and a cot.
I do think he is manipulating the system and doing it for publicity, but maybe he will bring more attention to the sad state of health care in our country.
