The plot sounds like the original, I guess they're just trying to update it, maybe because Kenny Loggins isn't cool anymore

I actually like the original, and I don't think it should be messed with.

Nope, same reasons. It's a classic and didn't need to be touched. That said, it's also not like it was some epic film that needed to be updated either.
Don't forget, I was in high school in the '80s. These movies are "my" movies. I don't like them screwed up.

I only saw Footloose once, and it was only in the past year, so I have no real attachment to it.
As a rule, I am against remakes unless they're remaking a really old movie that had an interesting premise but turned out to be booooooring. Movies that are actually good should never be remade. Pointless.
ETA: an addition about the boring old movies being remade: the remake must be awesome.
