baby book recommendations?

If I post on the Bump, it would be very awkward, so I'l just ask here.....

remember my earlier post about my friend and her new baby boy? (yes, still smiling over that one.) She does not want her mid-century modern house cluttered with the zany-colored baby toys (I'm beyond judging) so I want to send her a collection of baby books to start him off.

What are your kids' faves, or your own faves? My kids were kids so damned long ago I can't remember everything (although we went through QUITE the Junie B Jones phase with my daughter -- and we can still laugh out loud when reading those!), and I'm too lazy to pull out the box of books I saved for them.

I'm thinking standards like Pat the Bunny and Good Night Moon, of course, and perhaps to start his collection of Dr. Seuss books? Anything off the beaten path that would be good? (I'l be ordering and shipping from Amazon, so.. not too far off the beaten path).

thanks in advance for the tips!

Pam and John

  • We LOVE the Boynton books. Good Night Little Pookie and the Going to Bed Book are our bedtime routine. Hippos Go Berserk is just our favorite overall. It's awesome (One hippo all alone, calls two hippos on the phone...).

Amazon sells them in box sets :-)

There are also the Eric Carle books (Very Hungry Caterpillar), and then of course, Goodnight Moon and the Runaway Bunny (also favorites). We have all of those in board books, which LO likes to chew now.

I also like The Big Orange Splot, but that's little older. Love You Forever is great, but will make your friend cry, especially when she's still hormonal.

Other good classics - The Giving Tree, Make Way for Ducklings, Blueberries for Sal, Are You My Mother?...

My work had a book shower for me before LO was born and I have since become an expert on baby books :-)

ETA - LO now loves Pat the Bunny and will stroke the bunny's fur when we read it to him. It's so cute.

  • Oh, when you said "baby book" I thought you meant "baby book," not books for babies.

    What about . . .

    The Very Hungry Catepillar?

    Corduroy?

    Harold and the Purple Crayon?

    All classics.

Dr. Seuss collection would be awesome too.

She might also like books by Mo Willem (which somehow in my mind fits the mid-century modern theme)

  • We are huge fans of Sandra Boynton.  Everyone seems to have different favorites, so I take that as a sign that they're all pretty good ;)  Same with Eric Carle - I happen to like Baby Bear, Baby Bear more than some others.

I Love you Through and Through is another favorite.  I couldn't find it on Amazon, but it's a good one to keep in mind for later.  It made more sense to T closer to her first birthday anyway.

this started bc I saw (on a blog) "Iggy peck, Architect" which has kinda mid-century drawings and certainly relates to my connection to the mom!

and I forgot the Harold and hte Purple Crayon books - my daughter loved reading those, with her dad! (one of the few things he did right.... but that's another post)

  • Since you know the classics, and folks have already recommended Boynton, Carle and some other baby books, here are some new classics we love.

Anything in the Llama Llama series.

Duck for President (cute since it's coming from DC) or Click Clack Moo Cows that Type.

    Is Your Mama A Llama

I Love You Through and Through

Oh My Baby Little One (especially if she is going back to work)

    Time For Bed

Bear Snores On (or others in that series)

Any of the Kitten Books by Henkes

I can't remember if the baby is a girl but if the LO is, Fancy Nancy and Alice the Fairy are big hits.

  • My friend just bought for our baby the Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See set that includes the polar bear and another bear book.  She also bought the Berenstain Bears 5 books in one collection.  I loved those as a kid.  I don't know if the baby is/will enjoy them but I'm enjoying them :)
  • to add to the already-given great suggestions, this one makes me LOL and is very cute: http://www.amazon.com/Firsts-Arlen-Cohn/dp/1579391680/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1308763963&sr=1-4

  • Little Boy by Alison McGhee is super sweet. And the "How Does A Dinosaur . . ." books are pretty cute.

We're unimpressed by Eric Carle and received no less than THREE copies of Brown Bear Brown Bear. I try to pick lesser known books as gifts because of that.

  • I like all of the Eric Carle books too.

The Night You Were Born makes me tear up sometimes.

DD's favorite is Not a Box . We read it at least twice a day and it makes her giggle and laugh. Not sure why....

DD also like Chicken Soup with Rice and One was Johnny by Maurice Sendak.

  • Our favorite book is called Mama, Mama. There's a related book called Papa, Papa. It's short and very sweet.

  • Sprout's favorite is Sarah Boyton's Moo Baa LaLaLa! book.  I confess I kind of like it too. ;)  eta: Time for bed is a big hit too (with both of us)

He's also a big fan (now) of books with textures in them...especially fuzzy textures.

When he was a wee babe, he was a big fan of The Little Gorilla.  Sometimes that was the only way to make tummy time last more than 2 seconds! I think it was the big pictures.

I love getting books as gifts, especially if the book was a friend's favorite.  Sprout loves playing with them (basically turning pages back & forth) and being read to.  This is going to be a great gift!

  • I'll second Bear Snores On. We also like Dear Zoo, which is a fun lift-the-flap book.

Oh, and the Richard Scarry Busytown books!
