Where to live near Southfield?

A friend of mine just got a teaching job in Southfield! Big Smile  She's not from the area, and will be around soon to look for somewhere to live.  Right now, she's looking into Royal Oak, but is there anywhere else she should consider?  She'll be living in an apartment, if that makes any difference.  TIA!

Re: Where to live near Southfield?

  • Farmington/Farmington Hills?  We've got an apartment there now  and love it there.  Very safe, a lot of very reasonable and nice apartments.  the only reason we're planning to leave is because we bought a house.

  • I agree with pp, Farmington or Farmington Hills would be nice. Novi is nice too, but you are getting further away from Southfield.

  • I'm not sure what Berkley has to offer for apartments, but it is right next to Southfield and there are some really nice neighborhoods and a cute/small downtown area w/ food & some shopping. Work looking into IMO!

  • Good for your firend, it's tough for teachers now.

If she is teaching on the east side of Southfield, Berkley, Beverly Hills, and B-ham of course are great areas.  There is also an area of Southfield that is Birmingham schools and B-ham taxes.   This is where I live and I love it because I have B-ham, Royal Oak, Troy, right at my fingertips with great schools lower taxes than Southfield.  However, I'm not sure how many rentals are by me.

If she is teaching on the west side of Southfield, Farmington, Farmington Hills, and even Livonia are pretty close and should give her a decent commute.

Definitely Royal Oak or Berkley - I live in Berkley but I can't really think of any apartments there. There are lots of houses to rent though. A bit outside the downtown area of Royal Oak the apts will probably be cheaper.

  • I think it depends on the kind of area that she wants to live in and what she wants to pay.  You will get more for your money the farther west or north you go from southfield.  If it were me, I would choose Novi or maybe Farmington.  RO is nice for a younger crowd I guess.

I used to commute from Waterford to southfield everyday for school and it wasn't bad.

Ditto this.  I can think of one apartment building in Berkley, I don't know the name but it's right by Clarks ice cream - yummmmy.

Clawson or Madison Heights might be an option. I know there are some apartment buildings on 14 Mile between Coolidge and Crooks, I think that's still Royal Oak, those would probably be cheaper than downtown RO.
