House smells like dog and hair everywhere..help me

I deep clean about once a week.  This involves sweeping, mopping, dusting, frebreezing etc.  Throughout the week I'll spot clean certain things as I see they are dirty.  Like, I will sweep the mop the kitchen more often, or sweep the pet hair off the floor etc.

However, when I get home, my house just smells like dog.  I've got 2 large dogs, but still.  Is there something that I can put out that will absorb the smells?  It's worse when it rains.  Then it smells like wet dog.  This doesn't seem to change even right after I take them to the groomer.

Secondly, my black dog sits on the couch every day while she takes her four hour cat nap.  It takes me about thirty minutes on the weekend to get all (most) the fur off the couch.  Anything I can do to help this?  She is short hair, which is really more difficult to get up than my long haired st. bernard.

My long haired dog I brush, my short haired dog I don't.  She doesn't liek it, and it never seems that hair is getting on the brush.  I have two types of brushes and neither work on her.

  • Are your dogs kenneled trained? I have a blacked lab  and german shepard mix. They stay outside most of the day, they sleep in their kennels and are only out and about when I am home and downstairs. There is also a waterless shampoo we use on our dog between baths, makes them smell like baby powder. I also have tile throughout my downstairs (living room, dining room and kitchen.) so that helps with smell ALOT.

If your dog sleeps around the same time everyday maybe try keeping a blanket on the couch.

  • Waterless shampoo huh.  Do you know what the name of this stuff is?  Can you get it at petsmart?

  • I have two boxers that are usually outside during the day if it is nice, and they are in and out randomly throughout the day for naps.

They sleep on the couch, but since we have a leather couch it is easier to clean.  However, I have a blanket on the couch that is only for them and they know that they can only sit on the part w/ the blanket (same goes for our bed, they have a sheet over the comforter and they know to stay on the sheet).

They lay on the rug in the living room a lot (the rest of the house is hardwood floors).  When I vacuum, I sprinkle down some carpet freshner.

I also keep apple an cinnamon oil and reed diffusers in a couple spots throughout the house - but hidden.

I get compliments that you would never know I have two dogs in the house (and it is a small house).  I also regualrly burn candles.  Also, possibly get a candle jar warmer.  This way you can have the scent of a candle, but you don't have to light it.  And it lasts longer than burning a regular candle.

  • One strange tip for your black lab...

My husband gives our lab/ beagle mix a raw egg with her food once a month. It helps her coat and she only sheds 2 or 3 times a year. When she heads intoa shedding cycle we brush her outside and brush her hair backwards to get to the undercoat.

She only gets a bath once or twice a year because bathing labs too often is bad for their coats. They need the oils because they are water dogs. She stays soft and doesn't shed even though she doesn't get bathed all the time.

Our house smells musty from time to time too when the humidity rises. For us part of it is living in a 100yr old house. We deep clean the carpets 3 or 4 times a year and that helps. I am looking forward tot he day when we rip up the carpet and refinish the wood underneath.

  • I think this about my house too but EVERYONE assures me that my house does NOT smell-even H thinks I'm crazy.  It doesn't smell like wet dog but I think it smells "musty."  It seems that using a dehumidifier works.  Seeing that your house smells worse after it rains makes me think this may be your problem too...

I would try a dehumidifier (give it about a week to work) and in the meantime, try placing bowls of vinegar out.  The vinegar will absorb any odors in the air.  One of our dogs was sprayed by a skunk and BARELY made it into the house before I realized and made him go back outside.  The smell made it's way in and I was mortified.  We placed bowls of vinegar in each room and when we came home from work the smell was gone (the dog went to the groomer as well).

Hope either/both of these suggestions work for you!
