Work/life vent....(just needed to get this off my chest)

I am just SO DONE with my job.  We moved to MD last November for me to get settled in a job and start grad school this fall.  (I'm in a unique bridge program that didn't exist where we lived before)  Well my job SUCKS.  I absolutely love what I do (otherwise I wouldn't be going back to get a Master's degree in it!)  But the work environment right now is just awful.  I've been working close to 50 hour weeks which I know for some careers is somewhat the norm but I am hands on with patients for 90% of my workday, so its really exhausting to be treating people for 8+ hrs a day!  I am trying to think of other options but with starting school in less than 2 months I'm worried no one will want to hire me as I'm unsure of what my availability is.  But there is no way in heck I'm going to be able to keep this up when school starts and I'm freaking out.   Combine that with the fact several friends of ours keep saying they are coming to visit us and never do and I'm ready to pack up, head north, and forget grad school....even though its what I really want to do with my life :(   Sorry this got long I'm just drowning and frustrated right now :(

Re: Work/life vent....(just needed to get this off my chest)

  • I'm sorry work has been so stressful! Hopefully things will calm down so you can concentrate on school. Hugs and vibes that things turn around!
  • I'm so sorry you're stressed! Being upset with your job is no fun, I feel the same way for different reasons, but have been at that working 50 hrs/wk busy schedule so I understand how exhausted you must be.

Have you started looking for other jobs yet? Is your degree you are persuing related to your current field/ what you would be job hunting for? If school is related to the job then potential bosses might be flexible because you're advancing your education in that field. It's worth giving it a try searching, bc you're going to be super stressed if you add school on top of your already stressful job.

Keep us posted and we're always here for you :::hug:::

  • Aw Danielle, I'm sorry you feel this way.  That's so frustrating, and I can understand why you feel overwhelmed.  The only useful advice I can give you is to take it one step at a time.  Have faith that it will work out somehow.  I hope things get easier for you soon.
  • I'm really sorry to hear this, as I can totally commiserate with how you are feeling. When I'm totally fed up and wanting to cry with work, I try to just remember how lucky I am to (a) have a job, especially in the field that I went to school for and (b) have a wonderful life outside of these walls. So many people are stuck with a crappy job AND a crappy home life, it really does help me to remember that at least at the end of the day I have a great husband to come home to. Hopefully that can help you, too.

The only thing I want to add (and sorry if I'm reading wayyy too deep into your post) but make sure you're 100% positive that this is what you want to do before sticking with it and getting your masters. You don't want to go through all that schooling + money only to realize 3 or 4 years down the road that maybe it's not the best career path for you. It's very easy to feel *stuck* once you've focused your future on one very specific educational path.

  • Some very good advice shared - I don't have much to add except that I've also been there before, and that while it may not seem like it right now, it will work out. You have to keep reminding yourself of that! Hang in there :-)

  • *Hugs* Hope you are only going through a rough patch!  But, like the other girls said, this may be a great time to re-evaluate your options. . . Good luck and feel free to vent here if you need to :)

  • Ugh!  That really bites.  I would leave your job ASAP.  Even if the money is helpful it's just a job and there is no need to stress out that much.  Are you wanting to get a job in your field or are you open to something like retail just to keep you afloat?

Whatever you decide to do, hang in there and like Stacy said, just take it one day at a time!

     ((hugs))

  • Thanks ladies.  I am sure that this is what I want to do, the issues I'm having are  more staffing problems.  In the absence of staff I am having to take a much larger caseload of patients and that's whats getting to me.  I love what I do with them I just can't do that much!  It was not like this 2 months ago when we had a full staff so I am sure that is the problem.  Sigh I'm hoping it gets better and I'm toying around with the idea of transitioning to a PRN (as needed) position while I'm in school, kind of more just a fill in when needed at a few different places rather than try and keep a steady schedule, I think the flexibility might be just what I need.  Just gotta suffer through the summer til August 17th when school starts.

Thanks ladies for letting me vent and for the support!
