Hey girls,
I am going to the DR in a week on a girls' trip with three friends. My friend booked the resort and I have read reviews online and am getting nervous about it. The reviews are pretty bad. I have read reviews about two cruises and our HM in the past two years and some of those were bad and we had a good time. One cruise wasn't as great. However, these reviews are more negative and more serious. It is not "couldn't get into the restaurants on the resort we wanted to," it is buffet food out for hours, birds landing on food, service is not great even with tips, bugs in the room, rat feces in room, covered walkways flooded because canopies can't hold the water, etc. I had posted on the travel board when the travel agent recommended this to my friend and did tell my friend those and told her we would have fun no matter what b.c. I didn't want to be the negative one. Also, my one friend is on a tight budget and it sounds like we are getting what we pay for. I am rooming with one of my best friends and BM and I know we can make the best of it.
I have heard of many people getting sick a this resort. Some say only eat fruit others say don't touch the fruit or meat. Apparently, the donuts are okay. My MD prescribed me an antibiotic to take with me so I can use it if I get sick. Someone had recommended that. My friend who booked it has a son who is disabled and does not get away very often and has so many more issues in life than these, so I don't want to say much. My friend I am rooming with said stop reading. I am better if I know ahead of time of what to expect. Just wanted to express my worries. Sorry this is long and thanks for understanding!!!
Re: getting nervous about my trip
I don't blame you for being nervous. I think it's a great idea to have an antibiotic in hand though, just in case.
I also read reviews (mostly tripadvisor) and there are always quite a few negative ones, even for awesome places, so try to just keep that in mind and hope for the best.
Yikes! I'm sorry you are nervous - I probably would be, too. However, you can't always believe the reviews online. People tend to only review a place when they've had a really good experience or a really bad experience.
When I went to the DR, we had the same thing, and I thought our resort was great. So don't worry so much - I'm sure it'll be a blast! Take lots of pics!
Do yourself a favor...locate another resort nearby that has better reviews, call them and see if they've got availibility for your dates, but don't book anything. Just write down the name and number of the resort and a local cab or shuttle company and stick it in your carry-on. If the resort really is what the reviews say, then at least you've got a backup place you can get into!
I do it everytime we're going somewhere. I've seen bad reviews and had great experiences, but it never hurts to have a backup plan, just in case, and it relieves a lot of stress!
PS good call on the antibiotics!
