Gel Manicure

Okay, so I started a new thread, so it wouldn't get lost in the Chit Chat thread.  I went to my normal nail salon place.  I usually just a get a pedicure and they are pretty reasonable.  $19.99 for a pedicure.  So, that's just to get an idea of their prices.  I wanted to get a french manicure, so of course I paid more.  I'm not sure how much more I paid, but it was $35 for a french gel manicure that should last 2-3 weeks.

So, it is quite the process.  First I went through the normal manicure procedures.  Trim, file, soak, etc.  She then put on a base of 'special' polish.  (It said UV something blah blah on it).

Then she put the white tip polish on.  She did the outside three fingers, then cleaned it up with the brush/remover and had me put my hand under the UV light thing. Then she did three fingers on the other hand and had me put that under the UV light thing and pull my other hand out to do my pointer finger and my thumb.  Then that hand went under the light and she did the pointer finger and thumb on the other hand.  Then that had went under the light.  She repeated this process 2-3 times - giving me about 2-3 coats of white tip polish.

Then she she put a coat of clear 'special' polish and had me put my hand under the light.  Then she did the other hand and I put that hand under the light. She repeated this process twice.

Then I put both hands under the light for about 3 minutes.  When I was done my nails were completely dry.  She did put oil on my cuticles (sp) and told me to leave it on there for a while, because the light will dry them out.

During the process, we chatted a bit.  She said that gel manicures at her salon are not all that popular.  She said that people like the idea of them.  They don't want fake nails, but they want polish that lasts more than a few days.  She said the biggest turn off is that most of her customers don't want the same color polish for 2-3 weeks.  She also said that the price is not that attractive, either.  It's more than a regular manicure.  It is also really hard to get off.  She told me that if I couldn't get it off, to come in and they would do it for me, but they have to charge $5 to remove it.  Sheesh.  We'll see if I can get it off myself.

So far so good.  It feels kind of funny.  Like my nails are painted, but maybe a little bit thicker of a polish.  I'll post updates.

Re: Gel Manicure

  • Oh, nice!    The process sounds like getting solar nails without the acrylic, actually.
  • Very pretty nails... I love how they turned out!
  • They look pretty!

  • Hmmm, I think I might try this, especially for the upcoming vacation.
  • They look good!  I've had it done twice (both for weddings) and I did like it, but like the lady said - getting it off is a pain in the butt.
  • Thanks for the info.  Your nails look great.  I might try them for our cruise at the end of the month.
  • They look great!  I have got to try it.  My friend has had it done several times.  She said the first time/place she went to have them removed used a "scraping" method and it hurt.  But the second time/place they used a wrap (probably accetone) on each finger to soak them off.  She said the second removal method took more time, but hurt less.

This is how I used to get my acrylics off.

The lady said if I had them remove it, that they would soak my nails in acetone for like 20 minutes.  Scraping sounds painful.  :(

  • Those look really good.  It sounds a lot like shellac. I did a natural pink color for my wedding and loved the way they looked.  When I was ready to get rid of them, I just let them grow a bit, and the stuff eventually peeled off.  I was able to buff the last little bits, and my nails didn't look damaged after.  I agree, it is a little more pricey than a regular mani, but it was worth it because it was much less damaging to my nails than regular acrylics.

  • I have done it twice, both times for vacation. I loved how it looked, but when it was removed my nails looked nasty for a while!!

Oh really?  I am super bummed to hear that.  I did a gel manicure, because acrylics really mess up my natural nails.  :(

  • I have pretty much done everything that is out there to my nails and the gel polish is by far my favorite!  I used to get solar pink powder over my nails and it looked good, kinda like OPI "bubble bath", but it was horrible for my real nails and you HAVE to keep up with it.  The gel polish has not damaged my real nails and it really does last a full two weeks or more.  It is like super thick, super strong polish, which also helps to prevent broken nails.  I did not enjoy the soaking off process, however, my salon (Deluxe Nails in Fort Worth off Hulen in the Central Market shopping center, been going there for years and I love them!) now has solution that is not quite as harsh and doesn't smell nearly as bad.  Plus, I know you are probably not supposed to, but after two weeks, it isn't too hard to pick the polish off if you really want to.  I love, love, love gel polish!
