Cloth Diapers

We are starting to try for our second, and I am thinking I might try cloth diapering this one. What is there to know about cloth diapers? Where would I even begin if I have nothing to start with? Which ones are best? I am hoping this could help us save some money and our first always had a butt rash so I am also hoping that maybe cloth diapers could help keep the rashes at a minimum.

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • I could type a novel, but instead I'm going to refer your to MrsTice as she runs the local cloth diaper group which is a wealth of hands on knowledge. :-)

  • There is a FAQ sticky at the top of the cd board on the bump that is pretty helpful. We use a variety of diapers. Pockets/aios for daycare, fitteds and wool at home. There are also retailers that offer trials so you can try different types before buying.

  • One thing I'd like to add is if you do decide to cd, don't buy a bunch of diapers of one specific type/brand.  You'll want to see what works best for you and your baby before investing too much $ into a certain diaper.  I never thought we would use prefolds and those are actually our go-to diaper that I can guarantee no leaks overnight.

If you're ever in Des Moines, Little Padded Seats in Valley Junction offers a Cloth Diaper 101 class and could go over what they have in their store with you.

  • I agree with trying out a bunch of different kinds. What fits a skinny baby will not fit a chubby one. Different brands have different cuts. You'll also find that you gravitate to snaps or aplix/velcro. I'm lazy about the wash and forget to tab my velcro. Then it snags everything. I also had trouble with Ana's chub enveloping the diaper, so the aplix scratched her legs and belly. As a result I like snaps the best. You can get a little more customizable fit with velcro though. Several online retailers offer a sampler pack to try and then send back.

As a mom who used disposables with my first and cloth with the second, I'm going to say that the more convenient diapers and the less bulky diapers might be best to look into. I found that I was already used to how easy it was to change a sposie and how un-bulky they are so, while I initially was all for prefolds, the bulk and Ana's comfort level got me and I switched to pockets. I'd do AIO's if they dried faster, actually. lol! We get more rashes with cloth than we do with sposies and I gave up the overnight battle and do sposies then, but I still like cloth because of the money we save. We have a small stash and just wash more often.

  • Little Padded Seats in Valley Junction also offers a class where you can learn and see the different types there are.  An online resource that I love is Baby Junk out of Omaha.  We used her CD service (Diaper DuDee) before we moved and love her.  I still buy my covers and anything else I can from her!

  • I love love love using cloth diapers and you will too! It just takes a little bit of trial and error figuring out what works for you. I have been cloth diapering my twin boys since birth. We started with prefolds and wraps and then moved on to pockets.

A great trial that will give you a chance to try a bunch of different diapers before you commit to just one is:  http://www.cutiepoopsandbottoms.com/c_173/CPB-Trial-Run-Program.htm

Also, a good detergent is key to keeping away ammonia! I use Eco Sprout http://www.ecosproutsoap.com I found it to be the BEST detergent ever!!!

    Good Luck!
