Gluten & Babies

I am not sure if any of you will have an answer for this but I'll take opinions too!

We have about a 25-50% chance of this LO having Celiac as DH is a 3rd generation with it and it is genetic but there is a lot of evidence coming out saying that it is triggered early with how gluten is introduced to LO.

The studies and articles I am finding are suggesting to not introduce any solids/cereals until 6 months so the digestive tract is fully ready to handle it.  It also suggests to prevent any gluten introduction for at least the first half year.  With our history I am fully considering to take that a full year and then slowly introduce it and watch for signs.

But the major thing I am needing advice on is should I follow a GF diet?  I am planning on EBFing if all goes well.  There are lots of mixed studies concerning if gluten can cross bm and get to the baby.  So if you were in this position would you follow a GF diet while bfing?

Re: Gluten & Babies

  • How prohibitive is the diet? Would it be easier for you since your DH does it already or would it be pretty difficult for you?

My gut tells me that you'd know pretty quickly if your breast milk was bothering her. Newborns are cranky little creatures in general, but you can tell my their high pitched cries if they're hurting or just cranky.

If it's the case that they don't develop it until later, I'd say it's probably worse to feed it to them in solids where they have to digest it themselves as opposed to breast milk where it's pretty well broken down already. Formula might be a problem but I'd feel okay eating gluten or only slightly limiting it.

That's just a gut feeling though. I have zero scientific data to back that up.
