Migraine day #4

I haven't been on much this week because I've had a migraine since Monday afternoon.  I have suffered from migraines for years, typically I get horrible ones that pretty much cause me not to be able to function at all but I can usually sleep them off and feel better the next day.  Well Monday afternoon I got a slight migraine, nothing major but it still hurt and was still there.  I had it all Monday evening, went to sleep with it, and then woke up with it on Tuesday and it's still there currently!  I am thankful it's not a major one so I haven't had to miss work or anything and I can still function fine, but 4 days, seriously.  I've tried everything that normally works for me, sleeping, taking pills, drinking caffeine, not drinking caffeine, a cold rag on my head, brushing my hair a lot on the side that it hurts, etc but nothing seems to be helping.  Like I said, I'm happy it's not a bad one but 4 days is a bit ridiculous; I'd almost prefer a really painful one that just lasts 1 day.

Do any of you have any home remedies for how to get rid of a migraine?

I'm not suggesting you do this, but I knew a girl once who shaved her head because she had a migraine.

  • So sorry Xan! :(

I don't suffer from migraines, but I have heard that ginger has been effective.  There was actually a news release last week about it.  I'm not endorsing these claims, but it's worth a shot.  Make some ginger tea and see if that helps.

    Ha lol.

Although I think Brooke may be on to something.  Besides the tea, another option (which I think is yummy but some people hate the taste of) is crystalized ginger.  It's chewy and to me tastes like candy, but it is helpful when I'm feeling nauseous and could help migraines also?

  • I know it's usually the LAST thing you feel like doing when you have a migraine, but maybe try having some sexy-time (either by yourself or... not) and see if that helps?  If it's not a horrible one, and you're not nauseous, it might help.

Thanks Brooke!  If it's not better by the time I leave work today I'll definitely stop at the store and pick up the stuff to make the tea.  I got a bottle of Ginger Ale out of the vending machine to see if that helps but I'm pretty sure it contains no actual ginger lol.

True, I've done this a few times since sex is supposed to release tension/stress and often those are things that trigger migraines.  Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.  I tried it on Tuesday night; I specifically woke Jason up, told him my problem and he had no issue 'trying to make me feel better' (my gosh I'm pretty sure I'm never going to live that down.  Now every time I'm sick with something I am sure he'll say he knows how to make me feel better lol) but anyway, no dice this time.

I'm not even sure what's causing this one...typically I have 3 triggers which are stress, heat, and pms but I'm not stressed, I've been in AC, and it's not pms.  Before this I actually hadn't had a migraine in over a month which is a record for me so maybe the evil little migraine men who live in my head just waiting with their hammers to ruin my day wanted to let me know they are still around.  I guess they missed me.

  • All I can say it that totally sucks.  I just had one last night and for me, sleep seems to be the only thing to get rid of them, but this one was still lingering this morning (although not as intense).  I can't imagine dealing with it for four days.  I hope you find something that works for you soon!

  • I get them too, and tension headaches. I find when i get a migraine that if i take two sleep aid pills and lay on the heating pad (on neck) and just sleeping it out works pretty well also make sure your drinking lots of water I find my are triggered by dehydration a lot of the time. also it never hurts to see a Dr, for something you can take to prevent them and something to take once you already have one.

Hope you get to feeling better Xan!!

  • My only real suggestions are Imitrex (prescription migraine med) and hot and cold towels on head/back of neck.

I just wanted to update you all and say that I feel sooooooo much better today!  Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.  After work I went and bought some ginger root and made the tea that Bre suggested.  I think my migraine had progressed too much for it to help with it right away but the tea sure was yummy.  I'm saving the rest of the root in my fridge for the next time I feel a migraine coming on (or just when I want a yummy hot drink); I think if I catch it early enough the tea may really help.

Throughout the day the migraine just kept getting worse and turned into one of my 'barely able to function' migraines by bedtime.  I even took Tisha's suggestion of some sexy time but that didn't make me feel any better although Jason said it made him feel great...stupid hubby Confused  I went to bed with a cold rag on my head (as I had done the 3 previous nights) and hoped for the best.  I woke up around 4am to use the rest room and the migraine was still there but then magically when I woke up at 6am, it was gone...yay!

I have three ideas...one, maybe the migraine just had to get really bad, like hit it's peak, before it was ready to leave me alone (yes, I think of migraines as an evil person), two, maybe the tea just took a while to kick in or three, Jason's penis cures all (his words not mine).  Either way, I'm feeling great now and so happy I'm back to normal for the weekend.

Thanks again, my wonder nestie friends Smile
