baby name question

If someone were to name a baby Amelia would it be OK to call her Mia for short?  Or is that just a totally different name and should said person just pick one or the other?

Re: baby name question

  • I suppose you could. I had a great aunt named Amelia and we called her Aunt Melia, kinda sounds like Mia?

I usually hear people who name their kids Amelia call them Em or Emmy

  • I think that it is perfectly acceptable to call her whatever you want. Nicknames don't need to make sense. People ask us all the time why we call Hannah "Bean". We have no fvcking clue. We just do. :)
  • Said person should pick one or the other.  I don't see Mia as a nickname for Amelia.
  • Call your baby whatever you want!  I think Amelia/Mia is cute!

  • Yes! I love it and it reminds me of "The Princess Diaries" books/movie.

  • The OMG Mom (www.theomgmom.com) had a daughter named Amelia and she calls her daughter Mia.  I think it's just fine :)

  • One of my best friend's daughter is named Amelia and everyone calls her Mia.

  • Dude. It's like Robert and Bob. Or Richard and D ick. IT doens't have to make sense. As long as they (and you) like it. (Not the d ick, but the name.)
  • Oh wow, there are other Amelia/Mia's out there?  So it's not completely crazy, thanks ladies!  Just brainstorming right now but I'm really feeling this one.

Kathy, I think I'm going to really like omgmom.com but my computer is being super annoying right now.  I bookmarked it, thanks :)

My #1 choice was Adalyn/Ady but I can't convince H of it.  Abigail/Aby was me trying to compromise but I'm not sure.  Now I'm loving Mia.  I really like having a longer "presidential" name with a shortened version for those who know her personally.  So those are the names I like.  Growing up I always thought I would name a girl "Katherine" and call her "Kate" but now with the whole Duchess thing, it just seems weird.

  • I think it's just fine!  Like PP said nick names don't have to make sense (e.g. how Jack is a nick name for John will never make sense!)
  • I think that's fine.  I went to HS with a girl named Amelia and she went by Emily.  Mia makes a lot more sense to me.
  • I think it works nicely as a nickname. And I like both Mia and Amelia, FWIW. When we were first pregnant, Beckett really wanted us to name the baby Mia. I later found out it was a cute little girl from an episode of Team Umizoomi. Then he decided he wanted to call her Macaroni and forgot all about Mia.

  • I really like Adalyn/Ady. It would be on my short list, but my grandmother's name is Adaline. I wouldn't want anyone to think we were sort of naming our unborn DD after her. That would open a whole can of worms that I'd rather not open.

  • I think Mia and Amelia are both adorable. You nickname her whatever you want. Jace has atleast 5 nicknames Big Smile None of them make sense with his name to anyone else.

When Elizabeth Taylor was in the news a lot several years ago my Aunt named her daughter (my cousin) Taylor Elizabeth.  I have another cousin named Jack Daniel (Daniel is my grandfather's middle name).

In my family a lot of names are carried over through the generations.  My middle name is from one of my grandmother's sisters and is also my mother's middle name.  My brother is named after our father, who is named after his father, who is named after his father.  My uncle shares a name with his uncle and his son.  Many times either the first or middle name is carried over.  H shares a middle name with his father.  H and I plan to name our kids by carrying over names from our families to honor cherished relatives.

  • I met a WCF toddler today named Amelia, and I'm pretty sure I heard her mom call her Mimi and Mia. I thought they both worked and were very cute. Though it's also cute to hear Lily try to say "Amelia."
