Re: NWR: For anyone living under a rock...

  • LOL at your post title.

  • I was shocked when I saw that this morning, but did we really need non-stop coverage of it? They preempted the national morning programs to tell us the same thing over and over. And then again.

  • I am dying to see what they look like now, and find out who gave the tip.  They are saying it was a direct result of the 60 year old woman TV ad blitz.  Amazing.  This trial coverage is going to be out of control.

It is a big deal. He murdered 19 people on the record and was the father figure of a culture of drugs and crime that killed countless other people and wrecked families in the South Boston neighborhood. He was the face behind an era of chaos for that Boston community and a symbol of the city's political corruption. Not only is his arrest deeply personal for many people who lost loved ones to drugs and murder, but his arrest by the FBI is a huge movement towards justice. So yeah, kind of more important than whatever Rachael Ray is cooking up this morning, or the talking heads blathering on about celebrity news.

Pretty sure we all know who Whitey Bulger is.  I don't think ead was saying the story didn't deserve to be covered, but I get annoyed too when the media goes on endlessly about one story without having any actual new info to share.  They often just rehash the handful of sound bites they have and repeat the same thing for hours.  That's not all that useful IMHO.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Who watches morning television for news? That's what it is for. At most, you turn it on for the 15 minute cycle of news, traffic and weather and then go about your day. There are plenty of news sources that were reporting on other things this morning. NPR's Morning Edition, for one, not to mention the newspapers and Internet news sources.

This. If they have something new to add, by all means interrupt again. But they literally play the same clips over and over. I'd rather watch the Today Show.

I'm going to go with Missusbee on this one.

If you would prefer to watch The Today Show or The View, then by all means, knock yourself out.

You can catch up on the news as you please on cnn.com. Or boston.com as I am sure they will be updating frequently.  I fail to see why this is even an issue here.

  • Yeah, the news is basically on a 15 minute repeat. Top stories, weather, fluff piece or sports, and repeat.

All of this doesn't really make any sense to me. Missus first you said it should absolutely be shown over and over instead of regular national programs (not the news). Then you say 'who watches am tv for the news, if you want to find the news check CNN.' And Punky you are saying to just go ahead and watch the Today Show, but they didn't show the first hour of it because of the Whitey coverage, so how could I have done that?

I read this whole thing over like five times and am still really lost.

Yeah, I just read the posts for the first time (then went back and reread them) and I'm really confused.

I haven't really been around here lately, but iirc you aren't from here, right? It's so funny how someone who is a household name here can be unheard of elsewhere. This was almost as big to me this morning as when they caught Osama! But then, any of the other top 10 I probably wouldn't recognize either haha.

My friend from out of state said to me this morning: "Did you know before today that Whitey was on the run?" Indifferent  Um, yes.  I did.

Thanks, Rock. That's exactly what I was saying. I know who Whitey Bulger is, and I know he's a vile POS who destroyed many lives. And I AM interested in the story. When there's something new to report.  I just think the extended, non-stop coverage while nothing new was happening was unwarranted.  Standing around Billy Bulger's house at 6 am when you know he's not going to be coming outside to talk to you isn't interesting to me.  If there's some new information, by all means break-in.

That goes for lots of things, btw. I also get cranky when they interrupt the national programming for a blizzard.

And yeah, if I want actual news, I'm not getting it from the Early Show.  That's what The Daily Show is for.  Stick out tongue

  • I still don't think the View is more important that Whitey Bulger being caught, or understanding that it really matters to people and THAT'S why its on. Also because the cable channels are a bunch of corporate fatcat whores who are just in it for the money (YWIA).

    Anyway. Heeeeeere's Whitey:

  • I don't think The View is more important either - The Today Show, on the other hand... ;-)

You are clearly missing the point here. We aren't saying those shows are more important than breaking the news. We're just saying that once the news has been broken and you have nothing new to say, switch back to regular programming until you do have something new. In the meantime, there is a ticker on the bottom of the screen at all times on Today, you can catch it there. Besides, I'm sure they mentioned it on Today as well. It is national news, after all.

He is very much a Boston name. I don't think for 2 seconds the majority of people in, say, San Fransisco, Seattle, or Miami would have a clue who he was or why anyone cares about him.

I never heard of him until I had moved there, then read All Souls.

I'm watching the news now, and they say something about her being addicted to plastic surgery, so much so that the FBI have surgeons her implant serial number because they thought she basically couldn't help but have more surgeries. Craaazy.

Seriously! He looks like a mall Santa.

It's amazing how unknown he is to anyone out of state. My best friend from college was looking at apartment after we graduated. She called me to tell me she found a really nice one in a great neighborhood. When I asked her where, she said "Winter Hill." I about died.
