How to find a dog sitter?

Any ideas?

We normally ask family in the area, but they are all busy with an ailing family member and we don't feel like we can ask them right now.  Our dog is super sweet, but would not do well at a kennel.  She just doesn't like to play with other dogs (she likes them, but is just indifferent) and is more of the snuggle type.  We need someone to watch her for 5 days during the second week of July.  Does anyone have someone they would recommend?

Re: How to find a dog sitter?

  • I bet your vet would have recommendations.

We haven't used a dog sitter or boarding kennel for our dog - he goes to my parents' house when we travel - but if I had to make other arrangements I would call my vet's office for suggestions.

  • We use our pup's former foster mom.  She's a great lady who already had experience with Lucy as a wee one.  Though, I don't know if I would recommend her for you because she's got 2 dogs of her own that like to play(which is great for Lucy, so it completely wears her out!).

I second pp's idea of asking your vet.

  • What we did was go to the Pet Sitter International website and looked for someone who was bonded and insured and interviewed a couple of people.  I don't think the one we picked is still doing it though so I can't recommend her.  I do think that is a good way to go though.

You can try asking your vet for recommendations - a lot of vet techs do it on the side.  I didn't have good luck with that though because the girl never called me back.

  • Not what you asked for exactly, but as an FYI, Now Boarding boards in separate rooms. No mixing dogs unless you pay extra torment daycare. We board there because our dog is scared of other dogs, and she does very well. Just another option.
  • Thanks for the ideas.  I'll contact our vet and check out Pet Sitters International.

Do you know how much attention each dog receives while there?  I'll check out their website, but I'm glad to know you've had good experiences there.

OMG, I'm totally laughing at my iPhone auto correct.  I did NOT type torment daycare.  I think that was supposed to say "unless you pay extra for daycare."

I don't know the exact details, but I think they get individual play 3 times a day?  And I paid a little extra for another 15 minutes per day.  But when I called to check on my dog, it sounded like they'd been spending more time with her because they said she's a good snuggler.  (She is!)  The facility is open and staffed 24 hours a day, so there is attention around the clock.  And they aren't in kennels but enclosures instead.
