Wish me luck

So I'm going to be going toe-to-toe with my boss some time today about some things that have been going on at work.  Long story short, I was told I was getting a great opportunity last week and to start getting my stuff in order and now I find out that I'm instead getting a crap deal and being stuck with work that I'm less than thrilled about and he wants to know why I'm not jumping for joy.  On top of the past issues like getting passed up for a promotion by someone less qualified, being told I couldn't have a newly created position that I wanted because they were hiring a more qualified person only to see a less qualified one get hired, and being the department doormat expected to pick up everyone else's work without issue, I've had enough.

It seems like the only way to get ahead in this department is to *** and complain (like my other two co-workers who always get what they want after their hissy fits), so I'm going to let him know exactly how I feel about the situation.  I'm crossing my fingers that I don't cry (which unfortunately is what I usually do when I'm upset like this) and I come across as professionally and convincing as possible in this situation.

Re: Wish me luck

  • Do you know your boss well enough to know that this isn't going to get you fired?

There is nothing you can really do about them passing you up and putting in other people. I don't see how whining about it is going to help the situation any.

The only thing I can really see that you can complain about is doing other people's work.

    Good Luck

  • I am probably in the minority, but I feel like no one should keep their mouth shut about legitimate things that bother you at work. Just keep it professional, and good luck. :)
  • Good luck girl.  Don't cry.  You've got this.  Being a doormat will get you no where.  How is he supposed to know your ambition if you aren't vocal about it?

(and if he gets pissed, forget I said any of this...)

  • Good for you! I know it takes guts to have a talk like this with your boss. But sounds like it's time for you to speak up. I also have that unfortunate problem of crying when I get upset about unfair situations. I hate it so much! Try to control yourself as best you can. If you feel the tears coming or start getting that wobbly chin (ugh, hate it) let your boss know that you apologize for crying, but it's just the way you react when you feel strongly about something.
  • Good luck! In my 12 plus years in a professional position, I've been promised lots and been treated like a doormat. I finally stood up gor myself about 5 years ago, and it wasn't until then I was treated with respect. Try not to cry, and try to keep it positive - I.e. I'm awesome because xyz, and don't belittle other coworkers. Your discussion may or may not help you, but you always want to be viewed as professional or it will most likely hurt your career at your current company.
