I hate my teeth and so does my wallet

So I need a root canal, crown, and a few fillings. At least I don't need more than one crown.

Well, looks like we won't be going on vacation this year. Dang, I hate my teeth.

  • Right there with you...I'm looking at spending a nauseating amount of money on dental work in the near future. Not excited.
  • same here. i can spread it out over a while to maximize benefits but even then its gonna be a butt load of $
  • Same here. I am cavity prone. I went for a cleaning while I was pregnant but couldn't get X-rays. I need to make an appt soon to see what the latest damage is.

  • See if your dentist takes Care Credit.  You can put your dental work on the card (it's like a medical credit card) and depending on the total amount, they will usually give you so long interest free.   I'm sure the amount you are looking to spend will probably give you at least 1 year interest free.   Then maybe you can spread the payments out and still go on vacation?!?!

If any of the work can wait until next year, you can use your FSA for it.  I have had thousands of dollars worth of dental work done and I wored the FSA pretty well to my advantage.  Saving the tax helps a lot!

    Good luck!

This is how I do it too.  I have 3 teeth I needed root canals on... They patch them up so they aren't painful and all that and I had two done last year and had planned on one this year, but I lowered my FSA amount and with all the testing for DH and DD1 it's gone... So we're waiting til January. lol (provided it doesn't get worse)

All in all, to fix the fillings (I have several silver that I want replaced with white) replace one crown that was 15+ years old, plus 3 root canals... almost 10k!  It's crazy!

I've never been prone to cavities until I had kids.  After M, I had 11.  After K, like 9.  I'm pretty sure I had like 12 after Sam.  :/  IT SUCKS. lol

    did you like Dr. Imrek?

I thought he was good and knowledgeable, but I wasn't impressed with his office staff. He also wanted me to get a sleep study done. All of the things he mentioned were a bit overwhelming.  And when I told him that this was going to be very expensive and that I needed to think about that, he looked uncomfortable.

Overall, I think I will get great care from him, but I am not sure how I will feel about going to him long term. Maybe I was just in a bad mood and in pain. We'll see how I feel on my subsequent visits.

  • Great suggestions, ladies. My insurance and FSA plan year actually expire on June 30, so I am having some of the work done on the 30th and the rest done in July. This way I won't exceed my dental insurance coverage for the year, and I can use my FSA card for the second part of the work.

I exceeded the FSA benefits for this year at the beginning of January (July - June plan year). I am sure I didn't put enough in there this year either. I am just worried about not using it all.
