Water-park Question

DH wants to do a water-park for our stay-cation. Which of the near-by do you prefer?

Re: Water-park Question

  • I voted for Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels because I think it's the best out of what you have listed, but I don't really consider it a staycation.

Google says that its 3.5 hours from us, so we would be able to make it in 2.75-3 hours, not so bad to drive out there and back in a day, especially if it is significantly better than the two closer ones. I'm also not necessarily opposed to doing 1-night at a hotel up there if we got there and decided we didn't want to drive back home.

  • My list of preference would be:

    Schlitterbahn New Braunfels

Splashtown  (Mainly if I am staying in town to go somewhere)

I don't like the Galeston park...I really think the ticket prices are way too expensive and the place isn't that great IMO.

  • Oh and there are 2 other water parks that I know of in the area, but have never been to.

    There is one in Baytown

     And one in Sheridan

  • Awesome! Thanks BritanyV! *trots off to check new links*

I'd heard that Schlitterbahn-Galveston was kinda scuzzy (sp??), and Splash Town seems small when viewed from the highway...which prompted the poll.

We've been to Pirate's Bay before, but not this year.  They made changes in the off season to better serve the quantity of people that visited last year.  They were at capacity most of last summer if not all (it was their first year and they weren't sure what to expect and they were really happily surprised at how well it did).  That being said, we never had any problems with it last year, and had a great time there.   I don't know all of the changes made, but I know some had to do with concessions, and the conditions for those waiting in line to get in, as well as an increase in the number of shaded deck chairs and stuff like that.  We never ever had to have a deck chair that wasn't shaded when we were there.  I recommend getting there close to opening to stake your spot.  If  remember right, last year I think you could bring in your own food, so you didn't have to buy their concessions ... people had bags from Chick-fil-A, coolers from home, etc.  I think this is still the rule.

ETA:  They also added a second, much smaller, and less expensive water park on the other side of Baytown to try to ease the traffic at Pirate's Bay. I haven't heard yet if this has made any impact or not.

The new one is really small and doesn't really have much to offer for adults. Maddy would like it though I think.

  • The only time I've come close to falling asleep at the wheel was when I was young-er and dumb-er and tried to do Schlitterbahn all day and then drive back home to Houston. I don't recommend it. You'll be so tired after a day in the sun and swimming.

That said, I totally vote for Schlitterbahn New Braunfels. Just do yourself a favor and stay there that night and drive home the next day.
