has anyone gone from AD to dependent?

I'm on terminal leave right now (yay!).  During my outprocessing, I was issued an ID card with an expiration date of my DOS.  I was told during this time that I couldn't get my dependent ID card until after my DOS.  However, DH will be deployed at that point.  I want to make sure I have everything straight.

1) Go to MPF and get new ID card.

2) Go to Finance and change DH's BAH to the dependent rate (DS is currently under me)

3) Go to Tricare and change DS and I to be under DH.  Also, I plan on going to Standard, which is what DS currently is under.

Do I need 3 separate POAs to accomplish these tasks or can 1 POA cover all of them?

Am I forgetting anything?

Also, this is probably a dumb question, but how will I get on base?  My DOS is on a weekend, so it will already be past its expiration date when I go to get all of this done.  I can probably get someone to drive me on, but it would be much easier if I didn't have to mess with that.

Re: has anyone gone from AD to dependent?

  • I did. Our situation is a bit different because we went from AD to NG but I think I can help.

Are you guys already enrolled in each others DEERS? DH and I have each other as a dependent in DEERS. When we were both AD, he got full BAH w/dep b/c he was higher rank, I got type II. Now that he is no longer AD but I am, I get full BAH w/dep. Step 1 is to enroll in DEERS. You can't do anything until you're in there. We went on base(he was home) and enrolled in DEERS, got my ID that same day and then filled out the TriCare enrollment form.  The enrollment form you can download form the TriCare website and send it in. It's pretty easy. From my understanding though, once enrolled in DEERS you are automatically put on TriCare Standard(as well as your DS) so unless you want to change anything, you shouldn't need to do the form.

You should be able to get on base with a drivers license, most bases will allow that. I would get a specific POA for each, but that's just me.  Also be sure to have a few certified copies of your marriage license and DS's birth certificate.  I can't remember who kept a copy and who didn't but I took a bunch just in case. I would also take a DD214 and copy of your separation orders just in case.  I'm overly prepared like that.

I'm not sure about you going to change anything in Finance. We never had to. Once we enrolled in DEERS, our unit budget guy did it for us. I know YH is deployed but maybe have him give his personnel/finance people a heads up so they can start the process.

I think you will be ok if you have your DD214 showing when you separated and the paperwork to get a dependent ID, including your marriage license.  I would contact your Personnel department and ask them about it.

  • The legal office can do one POA for MPF & Finance "all encompassing".

  • I did this.  They always give you your POA back, so 1 should be sufficient, but get 2 just in case you're worried.
