Geography Questions

Since I have never actually been to the Tampa area I am totally lost on the geography of the place.

Is Bloomingdale not a town? Its on the maps as a town but when googling realtor sites it doesn't come up.

From what I have gathered on here and other boards the Bloomingdale area is nice, true or false? Also, does anyone have a group of zip codes I can search by which will keep me in those nicer areas?

I heard that Progress Village is a place to stay away? True?

TIA!

Re: Geography Questions

  • I am not familiar with Bloomingdale, Riverview or New Tampa areas so I can't help you there.  I've lived here just over 10 years and pretty much stick to Tampa proper.  When we bought our home we considered Riverview since you can get "more for your money" there but ultimately we decided we will pay a little more to stay in Tampa and be closer to our Tampa family.  But I just had to say LOL at Progress Village.  True, stay away from there.  Stay away from College Hill also.  It's not as bad as it used to be when I used to live here in 1994 for a short time, but it's still not good.  Projects.  As far as zip codes, it still really depends on the block.  Some have more good than bad areas and vice versa, but the zip codes are pretty big here.  I live in 33615 and like any zip there are areas here I would not live in, but I love my little area.  Good luck!

Dh's job is going to be in Riverview, kind of close to Progress Village so I suspect it will be in the ghetto..lol

From what I hear traffic can be brutal so we are trying to explore areas that will give DH no more than a 20 minute commute each way.

  • This might sound nerdy but Wikipedia might be a good tool to figure out what areas of town will nice. For ex, if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_County,_Florida , you can see lots of info like lists of neighborhoods, areas, their demographics, etc.

My zip code is 33647, which is considered a good area. I don't know much about Bloomingdale, but I think it's supposed to be nice too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomingdale,_Florida

    I love Wikipedia :)

If you want to ask about any other specific neighborhoods, I'm sure people can give their opinions. The area near USF is usually not that great, for ex.

  • Bloomingdale is not an actual city, it is a part of the Brandon/Riverview area.  I love this area, it's close to everything and has everything.  Look for areas around 33511.  I will advise to stay south of Hwy 60 (Adamo Dr.), your life will be much better that way!

Another 33647er here. I love it, but I think it would be a less than enjoyable commute for your husband.

  • I'm in Brandon/the Bloomingdale area.  We just moved from Riverview.  While I love our new house, it's kinda a pain to get to the interstate.  Living in Riverview was much easier.  If you're looking for amenities, in Riverview (city), you may want to try Panther Trace (subdivision).  You may also want to consider Lithia (city) and Fishhawk (subdivision), there are LOTS of families and great amenities there too.

New Tampa would be an awful commute (in my opinion), South Tampa is fantastic and the commute wouldn't be too bad because he could jump on the crosstown and he'd be going agasint traffic.

     Good Luck!

  • if you do 33511 or 33596 this is Brandon/Valrico (cities) and in the Bloomingdale area (community).

Honestly you don't want to look in Bloomingdale West (that is the rougher of the 2 Bloomingdale Communities. I was raised in the Bloomingdale area went K-12th grade in those schools so if you have any questions feel free to pm me.  I'd be more than happy to help.

Thank you. This is all so confusing and overwhelming. I have no idea what any of these areas are and we really need to just take a trip up there already and scope it out.

  • I just moved to 33647 - New Tampa....And I travel to work, driving the highways is not always fun, it is not predictable, but it isn't the worst thing in the world. Even with the traffic it took me an hour to get a lot farther than Brandon.

    And, I love it here.
