Listing Work History

I am having trouble deciding how to list my work history on resumes. My history includes hotels, restaurants and retail with a major emphasis on hospitality. I don't want to leave gaps in my employment history but I have had 9 positions at 7 companies in the past 8 years...and that doesn't include internships.

I am a college grad and I know that in most cases my high school work history is irrelevant...however, I started working at the front desk of hotels at 16. I feel that if I do not list that in my work history it will look like I am lying when I say "seven years of hospitality experience". What do I do?!

On top of that I have had a lapse of employment within one company - I had to quit my job as a guest service rep for the summer to participate in an internship but returned that fall as a supervisor. How do I show that?

I feel a little silly stressing out about the details but we are moving half way across the country unemployed and I don't want a confusing work history to deter HR from calling me back!

EDIT: Forget the list of my work history - it won't show up correctly in the actual post! Besides, it really is confusing, even for me and it is MY history!

Re: Listing Work History

  • I would consider listing internships separately

If you only missed a few months at the one job, I don't see why you need to indicate there was a gap there.

I'd love to see how it looks now.

  • When I had more position at a certain job, if the job duties overlapped or increase I added a line that I was promoted from XYZ

  • Here is the list that I have right now...without any formatting. Obviously I did not include the ( ) notes on the resume, but am adding them now to get some input! You can see where I was promoted at the Hampton Inn and at the Holiday Inn.
