Unpopular Opinions

I recently read  this article http://thestir.cafemom.com/teen/121237/teachers_need_to_stop_trying?utm_medium=sm&utm_source=facebook&utm_content=fanpage

and I wholeheartedly disagree with it. A teacher is a role model, and is someone who is there to care for our children when we cannot. If a teacher caught my child doing something they weren't supposed to be doing, I would be more angry if they didn't do something about it.

Also, there are so many kids in this country whose parents don't pay attention to them. They need someone, anyone to look out for them and help them make the right decisions. The person who wrote this article has obviously never worked in a classroom. Kids need boundaries, and someone has to provide them with those.

Re: Unpopular Opinions

  • I think it is ridiculous and unfair that the media injects themselves into the personal affairs of people's marriages. Namely, the newest Weiner and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its between them and their spouse, not the whole world and their careers certainly shouldnt be ruined over it.

  • Totally disagree with this.

    This statement made me Indifferent

Let me tell you, if I had a kid who was a good student with an otherwise clean record who got expelled for sexting, I?d be furious ? not at my kid, but at the school.

Excuse me? If I found my kid sexting, they'd definitely hear it from me. It's not the school's fault that this child is making a HUGE mistake. All child pornography arguments aside, sexting is a horrible idea.

If children don't have a role model to let them know that this is wrong, teachers should be able to help guide them. Isn't that their job? To "mold their minds for the future?" Shouldn't that also include the difference between right and wrong?

    I agree with this.

  • Guy and I haven't slept in the same bed since before Ellie was born, and I think it's good for our marriage because we sleep better that way, thus we're happier during the day.

I also get all kinds of snotty and uppity whenever I hear about friend's marriage/relationship dramz. I told Guy that he and I should teach a class on how to have a good marriage that works, because we're rock stars at it.

Ditto & the huge @ss flowers that are the size of the baby's head really bother me. I don't think they are cute and think that they take away from the baby. All you see if a huge flower.

The person who wrote this article has obviously never worked in a classroom. Kids need boundaries, and someone has to provide them with those.

And that is the reason for this: http://thestir.cafemom.com/big_kid/116007/report_cards_for_parents_fail

I understand that lady's point but seriously there are so many parents these days that have checked out from raising their own kids.  Someone has to do, why not the teacher?  And if you're kid is sexting, that's 100 percent proof that you're not involved or paying attention to your kid's life.  There's no reason why a teenager should be sending naked pictures around.

But on the other end of the spectrum... Education professionals have gone too far with the "Play 60" program and restricting what foods children can bring.  It's gone as far as some schools not allowing kids to bring in cupcakes and other treats for their class on their birthday.  I hope this rule disappears before Evie is in school because I refuse to send in apple slices to celebrate her birthday.  That's just lame.

my dad has been known to cut them off babies heads- so far he hasnt cut charlottes but they just have small bows on them. I only let her wear them when we are going out  so she doesnt look like a boy. I prefer hats with bows

  • Being sick is highly overrated.  If one more person says to me, "Oh I would love 2 days off in the middle of the week- I have so much to do around my house" I may pop off.  I was so sick I couldn't come to work, which means I was so sick I wasn't moving from my couch or bed.  If I were feeling well enough to pick up, I'd have come to work.

  • I'm with Ames on that article. You should see some of the kids I work with (and not just in my classroom, the students in mainstreamed education as well). You'd be surprised how many parents have no clue what it means to be a parent.I had a kindergarten kid tell me his favorite movie was Jeepers Creepers. REALLY??? can't even watch that movie and this kid's parents let him stay up til midnight watching it?? So all day he talked about Jeepers Creepers or slept because he only got 6 hours of sleep...which is also less sleep than I get on a school night. No wonder he can't retain anything. However, bad parents will always be bad parents and there's nothing you can do about it but set boundaries and enforce the rules while they are with you for those 6 hours.

I do, however, have issues with schools doling out consequences for things that don't happen on school grounds/buses/bus stops though. If my kid sexts from his/her bedroom to another kid in his/her bedroom/mall/etc, then the school should have nothing to do with it. However if my kid is sending texts IN school, then by all means, expel the little pervert. He/she shouldn't be using the cell phone during school time in the first place.

And I agree with Nat about the "Play 60" and school foods. The school where I work actually has a plan in place for bringing in treats. There is a list the teachers may use, but parents aren't allowed to send in anything AT ALL. They are allowed to pay $0.50 per child in the classroom for our school's nutritional program to supply a healthy snack for the kids. Confused

Maybe it's just me, but my unpopular opinion is about this. I don't understand why schools have to be "nut free" or "gluten free" or any other food allergy free. If your child can't have eggs, you let the teacher know and you teach your kid what he/she can eat. My one friend is allergic to peanuts and when people brought stuff in, she just didn't eat it....AND she was in kindergarten at the time, so I know it can be done. The teacher did have extra snacks (like gummies and such) so she wasn't completely left out, but as a teacher you need to be prepared for kids with allergies, just like you need to be prepared for kids with any condition that affects their school day. Nobody ever died from me bringing in cupcakes. And say you have 20 kids in a room, birthdays spread all over the year....are 20 cupcakes in 9 months really going to make kids obese? I think not.

See, now this doesn't concern me... but then again, I think I may have feared my father too much to even think about trying to pull anything.  Like, ever.  Also, I was so introverted as a teenager, the thought of sex, even in the movies, made me giggle, blush, and run away...

Just my luck, Sami will be my polar opposite, and I'm in for a world of hurt...

  • This thread is funneh.

I vote yes to headbands. Ellie wore them until she figured out how to take them off.

My kid is already a hooligan.

There will be no teenage sex in my house either. None. MIL let SIL sleep over at her boyfriends house when she was 16 and I gave her soooo much SE.
