OK, so I finished the movie last night. Have you guys seen it? Major spoilers ahead.
Obviously, some things are very different from the book. But of course, my memory is crap, so I can't remember. In the book, didn't he get Lang on tape admitting to what he'd done? I thought he did, but in the movie he didn't. And the writer wasn't killed in the book, right? I can't remember how the book ended once they were back in London.
What did you think of Pierce Brosnan as the prime minister? I didn't buy it. He didn't seem as charming as Lang was supposed to be. Maybe it's just because I pictured someone totally different in my head. We were going through negotiations for a new contract while I was reading this and I kept picturing the company attorney - stern, but old and with a bit of a blubbery face - as Lang.

Re: The Ghostwriter movie vs. the book (MAJOR spoilers)
Yes, he got a lot of information out of Lang on the plane back - and the scene where Lang dies was more drawn out and less chaotic.
He also had longer conversations with Ruth and just about everyone else.
But I can see why they cut a lot of that - the movie was already 2 hours long.
The book ended with that "I'm writing this down and giving it to my girlfriend because she'll know what to do with it...if you're reading this, I'm dead" nonsense. I much prefer them just taking him out.
I see you about Peirce Brosnan. If I had the time/inclination I might see if there are deleted scenes on the DVD (it's already in the mail, so maybe next time) that expand his part. It was cut down significantly and maybe there just wasn't time to see all of the nuance that's written for the character.
Over all I liked it, but this morning I'm thinking that if they had slowed down a few scenes, and truncated some other ones (the long drive where he's following the GPS and then being followed, maybe?) it would have had more depth.
But given the overwhelming MEH I felt for the book....I feel pretty much the same about the movie.
LOVE Olivia Williams, though.
Oh - and I HATED Kim Cattrell in that part.
Ditto.
Kim Catrral couldn't decide if she had an accent or not.
So he didn't die in the book, right?
I think we're supposed to assume that he did die - but it was vague.
I didn't read the book but Emmie and Meggy came over to watch the movie last night. I enjoyed it but I agree that Kim Cattrall struggled with the accent. Which is kind of funny since she was born in England. Like me with France she left at 3 months old to Canada. Then she studied in London later though. When she stayed focused on it, it was good but she kept slipping into her Samantha voice. Anyway, the girls who read the book liked Pierce Bosnan as Lang. I thought he seemed right for it but again I didn't read the book. He did the teethy politician grin well. I thought it was odd that the Ghostwriter let Ruth know what he knew at the end. That was like asking to be killed.
