Oakland/Emeryville Border
Forgive me if this isn't the best place to post, but I am not sure where else to... DH and I are moving from the Bay in a few weeks from out of state, and are looking at a place on the Oakland/Emeryville border. It's on Marshall and Powell, and I would love some feedback about the area. We're primarily concerned about safety, as I know so many places in the east bay can be great in one area and not so great in another.
Thanks!

That area can be sketchy so I agree with pp that you should visit and check it out for yourself if you can. Parts of Emeryville, especially near Bay Street, have been sort of revived with shopping and condos, but a lot of it is still industrial and some of it sees its share of crime.
I'd say it also depends on where you're from and what you're used to. I know a lot of people who live in Oakland and love it, despite incidents here and there. For some people, these incidents would pose an unacceptable level of crime; for others, it's not a huge deal and can be lived with.
The City of Oakland has a crime mapping web site that you can check out for specifics.
I'll third that it's a, um, gritty area. Emeryville is gentrifying, as is West Oakland (to a lesser extent), but West Oakland is a very dangerous part of Oakland.
How did you settle in that area? If you give us some more details, we can offer more suggestions.
I was going to say the same thing. If you decide that area isn't the best choice for you, we can offer other options if you give us more info on what you're looking for.
