Slugs

This is the first year we've seen slugs. What's the best way to get rid of them?

    Don't drink the water.

  • Beer in shallow dishes near plants they like.  They are attracted to the beer and then drown once in there.

  • I also agree with sluggo.  The beer was not effective for me and required regular monitoring.  Whereas the sluggo was more of a do it and forget it thing.

  • Crush some eggshells around the plants.  They've been going after my hosta and seems to have stopped them.

  • Last year I did rings of salt- it looked like a scene in "Supernatural" where they are trying to keep out the demons!

This year I bought slug magic and although its ugly to look at (small brown pellets) it really does the job and I don't have to reply very often.

On an odd note, I get a lot of satisfaction going out at night with some old small ice tongs and throwing the little slimeballs in a buck of salty, soapy water. I call it "going sluggin" and my 8 yr-old niece thinks its hysterical, gross and fun all at the same time. Now I hold the flashlight and she gets the tongs!
