Interviewing multiple places...

So I had a second interview that I felt went really well at an organization I really want to work for earlier this week. Today I got a call for an interview at a different organization for Monday. I really want the first job, but they told me they are a week or two away from making a decision. How do you balance interviewing at different places and possibly getting an offer to one job before getting an offer/hearing back from a job you want more?

I think part of this depends on your situation. I want to switch jobs and will take any of the jobs I interview with. I have a general idea of the salary, etc so a few of those things are also minor issues for me. I interviewed on Wed for one job and they may take 2-3 weeks to get back to me. I have an interview on Monday.. and who knows if/when she will get back to me.

I need a new job.. So I really don't care. I've done this before and it just seems to work out. I also never had someone need to know right away and I asked for a day or two to buy me time if I they were okay with it.

  • The decision on the second place probably won't be made for several days following your interview anyway.  If by chance you are offered the job you want less before hearing from the job you want more, then thank them and tell them you are very appreciative of the opportunity but would like to take a couple days to consider the offer.  Then call first job back and honestly explain that you are very interested in this job and would they be able to give you an answer within the next two days as you need to respond to another job offer.

This happened to me except that I had all ready accepted a job offer when an interview that I couldn't pass up fell in to my lap.  I explained to the dream job interviewers my predicament and asked if there was any way they would be able to make a final decision within the week.  They saw a candidate they wanted (me) and they made it happen.  It wasn't ideal for the company with which I had already accepted the job but I was very apologetic and explained that it was an opportunity that I simply couldn't pass up, and thanked them again for the opportunity.
